古今漢語相比較,差別最大的恐怕就詞匯了。
(1)、從詞的結構形式上看,古漢語詞匯以單音節詞為主,現代漢語詞匯則以從音節詞為主。了解了這一特點,就要晝避免把文言文中兩個單音節詞當作現代漢語中的一個雙音節詞來理解。如:“璧有瑕,請指示王”(《史記.廉頗藺相如列傳》)這里的“指示”就不能誤認為是“上級對下級或長輩對晚輩說明處理某項問題的原則和方法”,因為從兩個人的關系上看,藺相如既不是秦王的上級,也不可能是秦王的長輩。如果作為兩個單音節詞來看,就好理解了,“指”是“指出”,“示”是“給......看”,“請批示王”,就是“請(讓我)指出來給大王看”。這樣,文意就貫通了。因此,在遇到與現代漢語雙音詞寫法相同,但作為雙音詞來講又講不通或與上下文文意不貼切的情況,不妨試著當作單音詞來解
當然,前面說古漢語詞匯以單音節詞為主,并不等于說古漢語中完全是單音節詞,實際上,古漢語中不是有少量的不能拆開的雙音節詞的。我們不要把這些不能拆開的雙音詞,硬拆成單音詞來理解。文言文中少數不能拆開的雙音詞大體包括以下幾類:
聯綿詞 如:猶豫、倉皇、匍匐、窈窕
外來詞 如:單于、可汗、葡萄、琵琶
偏義復詞 如:存亡、公姥、作息、異同
特定稱謂 如:布衣、社稷、天子、足下
遇到這類詞語,切記不能拆雙為單。
(2)、從內容上看,古今詞義的發展變化則更大。除了日月山川牛羊等一些基本詞匯外,絕大多數詞語都發生了變化。這種變化大致有以下四種情況:
第一種,詞義的擴大。有些詞的意義,起初包含的范圍狹小,后來范圍擴大了。如:“登斯樓也,則有去國懷鄉,憂讒畏饑,滿目蕭然,感極而悲者矣。”(范仲淹《岳陽樓記》)這里的“國”指的是“國都”,而現在我們所說的“國”則指的是“國家”,詞義范圍明顯擴大。
第二種,詞義的縮小。有些詞的意義,起初包含的范圍較大,后來縮小了。如:“耶娘妻子走相送,塵埃不見咸陽橋。”(杜甫《兵車行》)句中的“子”指的是子女,既可是男孩,也可是女孩。而現在的“子”,則只有“兒子”的意思了。
第三種,詞義的轉移。古漢語的一些詞義,隨著歷史的發展,由原來的意思轉變成新的意思。如:“老翁逾墻走,老婦出門看。”(杜甫《石壕吏》)這里的“走”,是“跑”的意思,而現代漢語中,“走”卻變為“行走”了。
第四種,詞語感情色彩的變化。古漢語中的一些詞語,發展到現在,褒貶色彩發生了變化。例如:“存者且偷生,死者長已矣。”(杜甫《石壕吏》)句中“偷”,是“暫且”、“茍且”的意思,是中性詞,而在現代漢語中“偷”是“盜竊”的意思,是貶義詞。
一詞多義現象,在現代漢語中較常見,在以單音節詞為主的文言文中則更為普遍。盡可能多地掌握詞語的多種義項,是學好文言文的關鍵。在多義詞的諸多義項中,總有一個最基本的意義,我們稱它為這個詞的本義;這個詞的其他義項,都是由這個本義引申而來的,叫做引申引;有時,一個詞遠有些義項與本義毫無相干,只是由于同音的緣故,被借作他用而產生,我們稱這種義項為假借義。用打比方的方式形成的詞義則叫比喻義。如:顧:本義是“回頭”,其他如:“看”、“拜訪”、“照顧”、“關心”、“顧慮”等義項都是由它引申而來的,都是“顧”的引申義。“但是”,“反而”兩個義項與“回頭”這個本義毫無關系,只是由于同音產生的假借義。干城:本義是“盾牌和城墻”,后來喻指國家的保衛者。用得久了,成為一個固定的詞義,這就成了比喻義。如何確定詞的本義呢?最直接的辦法當然是查找工具書。《辭海》等工具書中,每個詞的第一個義項往往就是它的本義。在沒有工具書的情況下,可以從以下兩個方面來推斷。第一、是看這個詞諸多義項之間,哪個是引申的起點。還以“顧”為例,在諸多義項中,除了,“但是”、“反而”這兩個假借義外,其他義項的引申關系是:顧,回頭─>看─>拜訪─>關心─>思念......。這些義項都是由“回頭”引申而來的,這里面引申的脈絡是很明顯的。第二、可根據字形推知本義。漢字的表意性決定了大多數字意都可從形體上推知。比如這個“顧”字,本是一個形聲字,它的形旁是“頁”。在甲骨文中,這個字寫作“ ”,突出一個人的頭部,凡從“頁”的字,均與頭有關,如:“頸”、“項”、“額”、“顴”、“頰”都是這樣。因此,我們可以推知“顧”的諸多義項中,“回頭”應該是它的本義。
盡管一詞多義在文言文中相當普遍,但在具體的語言環境中,一個詞卻只能有一個義項。要確定一個詞在某句話中的具體意義,就要根據上下文來判斷了。在詞語的分類上,古今漢語基本是相同的,都分成實詞、虛詞兩大類,只不過古漢語習慣上把代詞歸入虛詞類。學習實詞,要掌握教材后面常見文言實詞總表上列舉的365個實詞的多種意義和用法,學習虛詞則要求從兼類情況多和用法靈活的角度掌握32個常用虛詞。綜上所述,詞匯部分古今差別大,包含內容多,并且掌握的準確與否又直接影響到對文意的理解,因此,可以說詞匯部分是文言文學習的靈魂。
