The Nobel Peace Prize for 2009 The Norwegian Nobel Committee Oslo,October 9, 2009 The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided that the Nobel Peace Prize for 2009 is to be awarded to President Barack Obama for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples. The Committee has attached special importance to Obama's vision of and work for a world without nuclear weapons.Obama has as President created a new international climate.Politic multilateral diplomacy has regained a central position, with emphasis on the role that the United Nations and other international institutions can play.Dialogue and negotiations are preferred as instruments for resolving even the most difficult(international)conflicts. The vision of a world free from nuclear arms has powerfully stimulated disarmament and arms control negotiations. Thanks to Obama's initiative, the United States is now playing a more constructive role in meeting the great climatic challenges the world is confronting.Democracy and human rights are to be strengthened.Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world's attention and given its people hope for a better future. His diplomacy is founded in the concept that those who are to lead the world must do so on the basis of values and attitudes that are shared by the majority of the world's population. For 108 years, the Norwegian Nobel Committee has sought to stimulate precisely that international policy and those attitudes for which Obama is now the world's leading spokesman. The Committee endorses Obama's appeal that “Now is the time for all of us to take our share of responsibility for a global response to global challenges.”
78.領(lǐng)獎(jiǎng)詞
Nobel Prize Acceptance Speechby Mr.Ernest Hemingway Having no facility for speech-making and no command of oratory nor any domination of rhetoric, I wish to thank the administrators of the generosity of Alfred Nobel for this Prize. No writer who knows the great writers who did not receive the Prize can accept it other than with humility. There is no need to list these writers.Everyone here may make his own list according to his knowledge and his conscience. It would be impossible for me to ask the Ambassador of my country to read a speech in which a writer said all of the things which are in his heart.Things may not be immediately discernible in what a man writes, and in this sometimes he is fortunate;but eventually they are quite clear and by these and the degree of alchemy that he possesses he will endure or be forgotten.Writing, at its best, is a lonely life.Organizations for writers palliate the writer's loneliness but I doubt if they improve his writing. He grows in public stature as he sheds his loneliness and often his work deteriorates. For he does his work alone and if he is a good enough writer he must face eternity, or the lack of it, each day.For a true writer each book should be a new beginning where he tries again for something that is beyond attainment. He should always try for something that has never been done or that others have tried and failed. Then sometimes, with great luck, he will succeed. How simple the writing of literature would be if it were only necessary to write in another way what has been well written. It is because we have had such great writers in the past that a writer is driven far out past where he can go, out to where no one can help him.I have spoken too long for a writer.A writer should write what he has to say and not speak it.Again I thank you.

Friends, family and especially Mark and Judy, I first knew something was up when Mark skipped our annual Maine fishing trip to attend Judy's family reunion 2 years ago.Of course, we razzed him quite a bit for that and we will never let him forget how he had his priorities mixed up, but when I see how happy he is today, how happy they are, I know that he probably made the right choice.Of course, I'll never admit that again and there better not be any excuses for next year's fishing trip!Mark has been my best friend since 5th grade. We've been through a lot together, fun times and a few jams here and there. One thing I learned about Mark is that when he does something, he does it all the way.Once he commits himself to something he follows through and makes it the best it can possibly be.I remember the year we agreed to paint my parent's lake house and the week we planned to do it, it rained every day.I was ready to throw in the towel.I mean, we had a good excuse! But Mark wouldn't agree to it.He insisted that we go up there for the next three weekends to get it done.I didn't appreciate it at the time but now I see that that kind of commitment is something to admire and emulate.Judy, I'm sure you appreciate the value of it too.You have a great guy there and, from having gotten to know you over the past couple of years I know that, as usual, Mark has chosen well for himself.I wish you both endless joy and love.A toast to Mark and Judy for a long and happy life together!

Welcome friends, to Elizabeth's semi-centennial party! As you know, Elizabeth likes to celebrate everything so today we're just a little more dressed up than usual. As you can see here, in 50 years Elizabeth has made a lot of friends.I suspect that like me, she befriended most of you by offering to help you in some way.In my case, Elizabeth helped me tie my shoe on the first day of school back in kindergarten.I hadn't quite mastered that skill yet but Elizabeth was way ahead of me.I guess I've felt that way ever
