第三篇:英語諺語
這是從網(wǎng)上搜集的一些關(guān)于狗的一些諺語和一些其他常見諺語,很有意思:)
Rain Cats and Dogs
Rain Cats and Dogs(傾盆大雨)這一短語的出處也不得而知。有記載的用法首次出現(xiàn)在朱納森·斯威夫特所著的《禮貌會(huì)話》一書中,該書大約寫于1708年,三十年后才出版。斯威夫特的著作是諷刺一些陳詞濫調(diào)的,因此,上述短語在斯威夫特寫書相當(dāng)長(zhǎng)一段時(shí)間就已經(jīng)在用了。
羅森指出,該短語有更早的一種變體,“Rain Dogs and Pole cats”,(“下狗和雞貂”),來自理查德·伯羅米的《1652年城市妙語》。關(guān)于這一起源的意見包括:
·古體法語Catdoupe意為瀑布或大瀑布。
·雷電大作與貓狗打架的聲音相似。
·北方神話中,貓對(duì)天氣會(huì)產(chǎn)生影響,此外,暴風(fēng)雨之神歐?。∣din)是由狗和狼侍俸的。
伯羅米所引用的上面這些說法是不可能的,因?yàn)楣糯⒄Z的變體中“Pole cat”與“Cat”是相對(duì)立的,說它是從Cat doupe 傳下來也不可能。同樣,由于Polecats(雞貂)也并不是Cats(貓),而是類似黃鼠狼或臭鼬之類的動(dòng)物。至于貓科動(dòng)物具體神秘特征的涵義,同樣也是不可能的。
還有另一種說法是在古老的倫敦,一場(chǎng)傾盆大雨后常常是汪洋一汽,淹死許多迷路的狗和貓,因此,雨停,水退后,滿街死狗死貓,似乎天上落下了眾多的狗和貓似的。這種說法聽起了像是花言巧語,但早期這一詞組用到Polecats,又使上述說法不太可能。
因此,關(guān)于這一短語的奧秘仍然沒有什么滿意的解釋。
