如英語口語中的 “What is he?”并不是指字面的意義“他是什么?”而是英語中習(xí)慣用這句話來詢問“他是干什么(工作的)? ”。我們這里要討論的英語成語是狹義范圍的“idiom”,指的是英語中長期以來習(xí)用的,表達完整意義的,結(jié)構(gòu)定型的固定詞組或短語。

按照詞與詞之間組合的搭配的緊密程度,詞組可以分為兩大類:自由詞組和固定詞組。自由詞組,是人們在交際時為了表達某個概念而把詞和語法規(guī)則臨時搭配起來的詞組,如read a book,an English word, on the desk, run fast.等。和自由詞組相對的固定詞組,有固定形式和固定意義,表達一個完整的意思,有時也稱為成語,可以分為三大類:純成語,半成語。純成語是一種約定俗成的由兩個以上單詞組成的非字面意義的詞語。如by the skin of one’s teeth,和牙齒無關(guān)。半成語中的單詞有一個或更多可以從字面理解,但同時也至少有一個單詞是不能從字面理解的。如foot the bill.字面意義的成語在語義上沒有純成語和半成語復(fù)雜。如on foot,no pains;no gains.不但因語言不同而相異,就是同一種語言也會隨著時代的發(fā)展而變化。

Not only because the language is different, but also the same language will change with the development of the times.人們普遍認同這樣的疑問句式和否定句式

People generally agree with such questions and negative sentences.但這種缺少助動詞“do”的結(jié)構(gòu)

But the lack of a verb “do” structure

無疑有悖于現(xiàn)代英語的語言習(xí)慣

Is contrary to modern English language habits

英語的“idiom”和漢語”成語“并不完全對等。

English “idiom” and Chinese “Idioms” are not exactly equivalent.Idiom的概念所涉及的范圍比漢語的成語更為廣泛

The scope of the concept of Idiom is more extensive than that of Chinese.因為idiom還包括諺語,俚語,明喻,暗喻,典故,搭配等

Because idiom also includes proverbs, slang, simile, metaphor, allusion, collocation etc.現(xiàn)代的英漢詞典基本上都將idiom翻譯成為 “成語”

The modern English Chinese dictionaries have basically translated idiom into “Idioms” “

Neither do men put new wine into old bottles, else the bottles break, and the wine runneth out,and hot-tles perish, but they put new wine into new bottles, and both are preserved”(也沒有人把新酒裝在I日皮袋里。

如“to act the part of a Trojan Horse”(里應(yīng)外合)這一習(xí)語中,”Trojan horse'即典出希臘傳說。

而“to kill the goose that lays thegolden eggs”(殺雞取卵)則源出希臘寓言:一鄉(xiāng)下人養(yǎng)了一只每天產(chǎn)一金蛋的鵝,但他仍嫌錢來得太慢,為了一次得到全部金蛋,就鵝殺了,結(jié)果一無所獲。后來這一習(xí)語就用來指代貪婪的短視行為。

英語中許多詩歌、戲劇、小說都以《圣經(jīng)》中的故事為題材
