A Keynote Speech at the 2nd Symposium on

Environmental Pollution Respected President, Ladies and Gentlemen, It's my great honor to make the keynote speech at this conference.Nowadays, PM2.5 has become an environmental problem we can’t neglect any more.A recent research shows very high levels of PM2.5 in a broad swath stretching from the Saharan Desert in Northern Africa to Eastern Asia.PM2.5 refers to the atmosphere diameter less than or equal to the particles 2.5 microns.Although PM2.5 only group content of a few earth atmospheric composition points, but it has an important influence on air quality and visibility, especially in winter.Besides, PM2.5, which has a small particle size, contains a lot of toxic and harmful substances.As a result, longtime exposure to PM2.5 which can go directly to the alveoli of the lungs, is a major health hazard.In fact, the American Heart Association estimates that in the United States alone, PM2.5 air pollution spark some 60, 000 deaths a year.Recently, PM2.5 has influenced our life obviously.There are fog and hazy weather in big city from time to time, which even causes many protest haze activities in China.And many factors may contribute to it.Firstly, the large amount of pollutant emission, including coal-fired pollution, motor vehicle emission, industrial pollution and dust is the root cause of serious air pollution.Secondly, the proliferation of adverse condition.The extreme adverse conditions for the spread of contamination is the direct cause of the formation of this contamination.Thirdly, regional pollution and the contribution of local pollution overlay.Due to the worse harms of PM2.5, it became the study object and chief pollutant for rigorous control in the world, especially in the developed countries, during recent years.But China does not build any PM2.5 control standard until now.In china, studies of PM2.5 are just underway, and the studies mainly focus on metropolises and seriously polluted cities.But the government of China has realize the problem.Chinese State Council passed revised air quality standards which include an index for PM2.5 on February 29, 2012.The new standards include indices for the concentration of PM2.5 and ozone(O3)over a period of eight hours.In 2012, the monitoring of PM2.5 and O3 will be conducted in four municipalities, 27 provincial capitals, as well as three key regions--east China's Yangtze River Delta, south China's Pearl River Delta, and Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei area in the north.In 2013, the monitoring has been extended to 113 model cities on the state environmental protection list.In 2015, the monitoring will be extended to all cities at prefecture level or above.So, it’s important for us to find a way to measure and reduce the level of PM2.5, which may help the government reach the goals.There are many ways to solve the problem.For example, many countries have been developing new energy to curb greenhouse gas emissions and fight climate change, while buzzwords such as clean energy, green energy and renewable energy receive much publicity.I believe we can surely control the air pollution in the future with the concerted efforts.Thank you!

Heroes

There are many types of heroes in real life or in literature, but the most courageous type of all is the one who is willing to stand up and say what they believe in even when everyone else lacks the courage to do so.Many people are content to go through life following the crowd.They will themselves to believe in what the society says is right, even when they know in their heart it is wrong.A hero is one who is willing to give up his position in society in order to tell prople what he believes is right.The abolotionists, such as Harriet Beecher Stowe and William Lloyd Harrison, were heroes in their own time.Before the Civil war, people in all sections of the country thought that African Americans were animals and treated them as such.During the reform period of the Jacksonian era William Lloyd Garrison began to publish his abolitionist newspaper The Liberator.In this newpaper he demanded that the African American slavesbesset free immeadietly, without any compensation to their owners.Because his view on slavery was against the common belief of the population he was not received well.Throughout his life, he was given multiple death threats and one of his friends was killed.Rudyard Kipling once wrote in his poem“If”, which said that you will be a man if you can stand up and say what you believe in when all the men around you doubt you.Heroes must hace the courage to risk ecerything they love to stand up for theirselves in the face of opposition.William Lloyd Garrison stood up against a societh which had accepted slavery as a right.He believe that what his heart told him was right.This person has hopefully shown others to believe in themselves and what they view in their hearts.

A Farewell Speech by a Participant at the 2nd Symposium on Environmental Pollution Respected President, Ladies and Gentlemen, It's my great honor to speak on behalf of all the participants in this closing session of the symposium.First of all, we would like to thank the China Environmental Industry Association and Tsinghua University for your kind invitation to attend the symposium.This has been an extraordinarily productive session, attended by a record number of 110 countries and approximately 400 delegates.As well as the others, I enjoyed the chance to visit your University and meet with so many excellent scientists and experts in the field of environmental engineering.In fact, this tour has been full of interesting and memorable events.I have talked and made friends with so many scholars from different countries, and visited your laboratories and research centers, all of which have left a deep impression on me.Besides, we also enjoyed sightseeing the world famous ancient city of Beijing.Please allow me to extend my heartfelt thanks to you for the considerate arrangements again.The next conference will be held in Nanjing at our college.We will do our best to make the forthcoming gathering another fruitful and pleasant one.I'm looking forward to meeting all of you next year.Thank you!
