alcohol.At best , it allows them not to think about their innner lives or about the war.Although they spend nearly all of their time partying in one way or another, they remain sorrowful or unfulfilled.Hence, their drinking and dancing is just a futile distraction, a purposeless activity characteristic of a wandering, aimless life.

哈代創作的《苔絲》，較之他的前輩作家在更高的層次上創造性地塑造了一個被侮辱的、具有反抗性的女性形象苔絲。她不再是小說中的陪襯者，而是完完全全統治整個小說的女主人公。小說反映了一個時代將要覆滅，新的時代在掙扎中崛起。這是此書極為特別的地方。縱觀英國近代文學史，人類文明在一步步得到充實飽滿。人們不斷在挑戰社會的禁錮。擺脫社會帶來的精神枷鎖。從每一個時期的作品可以慢慢發現人們思想的進步，越來越豐富，越來越全面。《苔絲》比狄更斯的作品更加有力的徹底的揭露社會的黑暗和丑陋，也更貼近現實，苔絲被亞力克侮辱，卻得不到同情。在那些屈辱的日子里，她為唯一的活動就是在黃昏以后，跑去樹林漫步。只有那時她心里才能得到些許的寧靜，才不會感到寂寞。這是因為傳統宗教觀念在她心里根深蒂固的原因，她無法擺脫宗教觀念。書中最令我難忘之處是，在苔絲和安吉的新婚之夜，安吉對苔絲坦白了他不堪的過往得到了苔絲 的寬恕，而當苔絲向安吉坦白她那不堪的往事時，安吉卻沒有像苔絲寬恕他那樣寬恕苔絲。他說：“啊，苔絲，這種事怎么能寬恕呢？你過去是一個人，而如今卻成了另一個人。天啦，寬恕怎么能用在這樣稀奇古怪的魔術戲法上啦？”這句話令苔絲大為吃驚失望，也令我產生了無限的思考。如果說從前亞力克讓苔絲在肉體上受到了很大的痛苦，那么安吉就讓苔絲在精神上受了很大的打擊。作為一個丈夫無法容忍妻子的過去卻能對自己的歷史一抹而去、一笑而過。可以想象當時男女的極為不平等。苔絲一直努力的追求美好的生活，卻一次次深受打擊，這就是現實。安吉表面溫文爾雅，但實際并沒有完全擺脫傳統觀念和世俗偏見，對于苔絲不清白的歷史，他卻來抓著傳統觀念不放，視苔絲為不潔女人。誠然，后來安吉醒悟了，誠心悔過回來找苔絲。但此時苔絲已經又迫于無奈回到了亞力克的身邊，做了他的情人。也就是這時戲劇性的一幕發生了。苔絲極為無奈，為了真愛，親手殺死了亞力克。安吉與苔絲度過了幾天幸福的日子。最后等待的是他們的永別、苔絲的絞刑。如果誰給苔絲帶來的傷痛更大的話，我覺得安吉的罪責不亞于亞力克。如果說亞力克從肉體上傷害了苔絲，那安吉則是從精神上摧殘了苔絲，是她陷入絕境，最后走向毀滅。如果當時安吉能從容面對已發生的不堪事實，接受苔絲，那么苔絲的命運該是怎么的旋轉可想而知，他們就會是最幸福的一對，因為他們確實是真心相愛了。可惜由于男人的世俗觀念，一念之間，就造成了原本幸福的人兒的悲劇命運。

不過安吉也有非常可人的一面。在書中第二十三章，苔絲和其他 三個女擠奶工去梅爾斯托克教堂的路上經過一個最低的地帶，洼地中積滿了水，在這極為考究的日子里，姑娘們不會像往常一樣滿不在乎的趟過去。正在思索之時，卻巧遇了安吉，安吉愿為姑娘們搭建一座移動的橋，愿將他們一個個抱到對岸，四個心房頓時猛跳起來。對于安吉來說，他這番行動的四分之三之時普普通通的友善行為而已。當最后輪到苔絲時，苔絲羞搭拒絕。而安吉一句極為看貼心的話出動了我。“三個利亞就是為了一個拉結。”也就是說我為你白白的花費了四分之三的力氣。哈哈，太可愛了。好溫馨的畫面，好感人的話語。紳士風度盡顯。男人可以為了愛而改變，為了愛而付出無謂的犧牲，只為了取悅于自己愛的人。書中還有一處我覺得稍帶戲劇性的一幕。苔絲在牧場擠奶的日子里，有一天清晨，牛奶房里的攪奶器還在照常運轉，但卻攪不出黃油來。每當出現這種情況，牛奶場就癱瘓了。有擠奶工就推斷說“也許牛奶房里有人談上戀愛了吧！”，好滑稽的臆想。此話一出，苔絲滿臉蒼白就借機出去了。更為戲劇性的是苔絲一出門，旋轉著的攪乳機里的牛奶也從嘰里咕嚕的聲音變成關鍵性的啪嗒啪嗒的聲音了，黃油出來了?? 《苔絲》一書發表至今已經有一百多年了，一度遭到資產階級的猛烈攻擊。但是攻擊未能掩蓋他的光輝。再說說苔絲的悲劇，說到底是一場社會的悲劇。苔絲還在少女之時就挑起了家庭生活的重擔。為了謀生，不得不到處飄蕩，受盡剝削和欺凌。特別是在她父親死去時，住了幾代人的房子由于租期已到，不得不被狠心的地主逼著搬出去，其狀慘不忍睹。
