“I am here to speak for all generations to come.I am here to speak on behalf of the starving children around the world whose cries go unheard.I am here to speak for the countless animals dying across this planet, because they have nowhere left to go.I am afraid to go out in the sun now, because of the holes in our ozone.I am afraid to breathe the air, because I don?t know what chemicals are in it.I used to go fishing in Vancouver, my home, with my Dad until, just a few years ago, we found a fish full of cancers.And now we hear of animals and plants going extinct every day, vanishing forever.In my life, I have dreamt of seeing the great herds of wild animals, jungles and rainforests full of birds and butterflies, but now I wonder if they will even exist for my children to see.”

“Did you have to worry of these things when you were my age? All this is happening before our eyes and yet we act as if we have all the time we want and all the solutions.I?m only a child and I don?t have all the solutions, but I want you to realize, neither do you.You don?t know how to fix the holes in our ozone layer.You don?t know how to bring the salmon back up a dead stream.You don?t know how to bring back an animal now extinct.And you can?t bring back the forest that once grew where there is now a desert.If you don?t know how to fix it, please stop breaking it.”

“Here you may be delegates of your governments, business people, organizers, reporters or politicians.But, really, you?re mothers and fathers, sisters and brothers, aunts and uncles and all of you are someone?s child.I?m only a child, yet I know we are all part of a family, 5 billion strong, in fact 30 million species strong.And borders and governments will never change that.I?m only a child, yet I know we are all in this together and should act as one single world towards one single goal.”

“In my anger, I am not blind and in my fear I am not afraid of telling the world how I feel.In my country we make so much waste, we buy and throw away, buy and throw away, buy and throw away and yet Northern countries will not share with the needy.Even when we have more than enough we are afraid to share, we are afraid to let go of some of our wealth.In Canada , we live the privileged life.We?ve plenty of food, water and shelter.We have watches, bicycles, computers and television sets.The list could go on for 2 days.Two days ago here in Brazil , we were shocked when we spent time with some children living on the streets.This is what one child told us, ?I wish I was rich and if I were, I would give all the street children food, clothes, medicines, shelter and love and affection?.If a child on the street who has nothing is willing to share, why are we who have everything still so greedy? I can?t stop thinking that these are children my own age, that it makes a tremendous difference where you are born.And that I could be one of those children living in the favelas of Rio.I could be a child starving in Somalia , or a victim of war in the Middle East or a beggar in India.I am only a child, yet I know if all the money spent on war was spent on finding environmental answers ending poverty and in finding treaties, what a wonderful place this earth would be.”

“At school, even in kindergarten, you teach us how to behave in the world.You teach us to not to fight with others, to work things out, to respect others and to clean up our mess, not to hurt other creatures, to share, not be greedy.Then, why do you go out and do the things you tell us not to do? （演講全文）大家好，我是瑟玟．鈴木，代表ECO發(fā)言。ECO是兒童環(huán)保團(tuán)體（Environmental Children's Organization）的縮寫。我們是一群十二歲到十三歲的加拿大兒童團(tuán)體，為了改變世界的現(xiàn)狀而努力。我們自籌旅費(fèi)，從加拿大來到巴西，經(jīng)歷一萬公 里的旅程，只為了告訴各位大人們，必須改變現(xiàn)在的世界。

今天我來到這里，沒有任何動機(jī)。我從事環(huán)保運(yùn)動，是為了自己的未來而奮斗。失去自己的未來，跟選舉落敗和股票慘跌是不能一概而論的。

我在此要說的內(nèi)容，是為了所有活在未來的孩子，也為了世界上那些飽受饑餓之苦卻無人關(guān)心的孩子們，以及無路可走而死亡殆盡的無數(shù)動物。

我現(xiàn)在很怕站在太陽底下，因為臭氧層有破洞。就連呼吸都會感到害怕，因為空氣中可能會有毒。我跟爸爸常去溫哥華釣魚。直到幾年前，發(fā)現(xiàn)了得癌癥的魚為止。而現(xiàn)在，我們幾乎每天都會聽到動植物絕 種的消息。它們永遠(yuǎn)不會再活過來了。

我這一生當(dāng)中有個夢想，希望有一天能夠看到一片叢林，里頭有各種野生動物和許多飛舞的鳥兒、蝴蝶。

可是，到了我們的下一代，是不是再也無法擁有這樣的夢想？你們在我這個年紀(jì)時，是否曾經(jīng)擔(dān)心過這樣的問題呢？

這么重要的事情，并且事態(tài)如此嚴(yán)重，我們?nèi)祟悈s仍然用不以為意的輕松態(tài)度來面對。我只是一個小孩，坦白說，不知道該如何挽救這個危機(jī)。可是，希望你們大人能夠明白，即使是你們也無法解決！

你們不知道，該如何填補(bǔ)臭氧層的破洞吧？ 你們不知道，該如何讓鮭魚重回變成死水的河川吧？ 你們不知道，該如何才能讓絕種的動物復(fù)活吧？ 還有，現(xiàn)在已經(jīng)變成沙漠的地方，你們也不知道該如何再造成森林吧？

如果不知道該如何恢復(fù)，就請別再繼續(xù)破壞下去吧！

在座當(dāng)中除了政府、企業(yè)和團(tuán)體人士的代表，也許還有媒體人士和政治家吧？你們是別人的母親、父親、姐妹、兄弟、叔叔伯伯、阿姨嬸嬸，而你們每個人同樣也都是為人子女吧！

我還是個孩子，但我知道在場的每個人，都是同一個大家庭的一員。

我們是個擁有五十億以上人口的大家庭。不，其實，是由三千萬種生物所構(gòu)成的家庭。

無論國境與各國政府如何將我們區(qū)隔，這一點仍然不會改變。

雖然我是個孩子，但是我明白，大家身為這個大家庭的一員，就必須為單一的目標(biāo)團(tuán)結(jié)行動。

我很憤怒，卻沒有迷失自己。

我很害怕，可是，要把自己的感受傳達(dá)給全世界，我卻不害怕。

在我的國家，我們浪費(fèi)了許多東西。買了就丟，然后再買過?再丟。這樣浪費(fèi)物資的北方國家，根本無法將資源分享給貧困的國家。即使物資充裕，我們卻害怕施舍、害怕失去自己手中的資產(chǎn)。

在加拿大的我們，享有充分的飲食與居家生活。時鐘、腳踏車、電腦、電視……要數(shù)遍我們所擁有的東西，大概要花上好幾天吧！

兩天前，我在巴西這里遇到一群無家可歸的流浪兒。我們很驚訝，因為其中有個孩子跟我們說：「我真想變有錢。如果我有錢的話，我要給所有無家可歸的孩子們，食物、衣 服、藥品、房子，以及愛與溫暖。」

一個失去一切的流浪兒，都會想到互相分享，那么擁有一切的我們，又為什么要這么貪婪？這些不幸的孩子們，年紀(jì)都和我相仿，令我無法忘懷。我們出生在不同的地方，卻過著如此天差地別的人生。

我可能也會是住在里約貧民窟的孩子之一，或是索馬利亞的饑餓兒童、中東戰(zhàn)爭的犧牲者，又或許是在印度當(dāng)乞丐。

我雖然還是孩子，卻很清楚，如果把花在戰(zhàn)爭上的錢，全部用來解決貧窮與環(huán)境問題，地球?qū)兂梢活w美麗的星球吧！

在學(xué)校……不，即使是在幼稚園，你們都在告訴我們，該如何在這世界上遵守規(guī)范。

比如說：

不要互相爭執(zhí)，要以溝通的方式共同解? M問題，尊重他人，弄亂的東西要自己整理，不隨便傷害其他生物，相互分享，及不能貪得無厭。

那么，你們又為什么做出這些不要我們?nèi)プ龅氖履兀?/p>

請不要忘記，你們?yōu)槭裁匆獊韰⒓舆@場會議，還有，是為了誰而這么做的。

是為了你們的孩子，也就是我們。各位正透過這樣的會議，決定我們要在什么樣的世界里成長。

父母總是告誡孩子，「一切都會順利的」，或是「我們已經(jīng)盡力而為」、「這又不是世界末日」。

但我不認(rèn)為，大人們還能再用這種話來告誡小孩了。

畢竟，你們有將孩子的未來排在第一順位嗎？

父親總是告訴我：「你的價值是以你所做的事，而不是以你所說的話來決定的。」

可是我卻為了你們大人的所作所為在夜里哭泣。

你們總是說愛我們，那么，請用行動來證明。

「地球環(huán)境高峰會」之后，在全球?qū)W校、企業(yè)、國際會議與集會爭相邀請下展開活動的瑟玟，除了一九九三年獲頒「全球500獎」（Global 500）以外，并成為一九九七～二○○一年間創(chuàng)立「聯(lián)合國地球憲章」工作的青年代表。

二○○二年，瑟玟于美國耶魯大學(xué)畢業(yè)，同時創(chuàng)立了NGO「SKYFISH PROJECT」（以瑟玟最喜歡的湖來命名）（http://www.tmdps.cn）。最初的努力目標(biāo)為「ROR（體認(rèn)責(zé)任）」計劃，已于國際間展開了宣傳活動。并在日本NGO邀請下赴日，引起極大的迴響。守護(hù)美好土地的這份心意，經(jīng)常成為瑟玟「行動」的原動。

這本特別的書，以中英對照、搭配圖文的方式紀(jì)錄她十二歲時的這場演講，書后更收錄了小女孩的人生經(jīng)歷和她改變世界的過程。她將提醒每一個我們，改變這個世界，保護(hù)我們的地球，并非是政府的責(zé)任，而是個人的責(zé)任。是一本單純，但是非常撼動人心的作品。

在二00二年她發(fā)表于Time的文章中提到，現(xiàn)在已經(jīng)不再是小孩子的她，所擔(dān)心的是，人們依然不清掃自己所製造出來的溷亂，不面對自己的生活方式所應(yīng)付出的代價，依然過度的掠取這個環(huán)境的一切。傾聽小孩子的祈禱

I'm only a child and I don't have all the solutions 但我也想讓你們明白，你們大人也不知道！but I want you to realize, neither do you!你們不知道如何修補(bǔ)臭氧層的空洞

You don't know how to fix the holes in our ozone layer 你們不知道如何讓鮭魚回到已死去的河流中

You don't know how to bring salmon back up a dead stream 你們不知道如何才能讓絕種的動物復(fù)活

You don't know how to bring back an animal now extinct 你們也不能把現(xiàn)在是沙漠的地方

And you can't bring back the forests 變回茂密的森林

that once grew where there is now desert 如果你們不知道如何修復(fù)，至少也請停止繼續(xù)破壞！

If you don't know how to fix it, please stop breaking it!在座的各位大人們中有政府官員

here,you may be delegates of your governments, 商業(yè)精英，團(tuán)體人士，記者和政治家

business people,organizers,reporters or politicians 但同時你們也是孩子的母親、父親、姐姐、哥哥

gut really you are mothers and fathers,sisters and brothers, 叔叔伯伯，嬸嬸阿姨——你們也都曾為人子女

aunts and uncles _and all of you are someone's child 我只是一個孩子，我知道我們都屬于一個大家庭 I'm only a child yet I know we are all part of a family.有著50億人口，三千萬中生物的大家庭

five billion strong, in fact ,30million species strong 國界和政府并不能把我們分隔開

and borders and governments will never change that 我只是一個孩子，我知道我們都在一起

and should act as one single world towards one single goal.我很憤怒，但并不盲目。我很害怕

that I could be one of those children living in the Favellas of Rio;我也可能是索馬里的饑餓兒童

I could be a child starving in Somalia;我可能是中東戰(zhàn)爭的受害者，也可能是在印度當(dāng)乞丐

a victim of war in the Middle East or a beggar in India.我雖然只是一個孩子，我也清楚 I'm only a child yet I know 如果把花在戰(zhàn)爭上的錢

if all the money spent on war 全部用來改善環(huán)境，was spent on finding environmetal answers 消除貧窮，實現(xiàn)和平

ending poverty and finging treaties 地球會變得多么美好！

what a wonderful place this earth would be!在學(xué)校里，甚至從幼兒園開始

At school,even in kingergarten 你們大人就開始教導(dǎo)我們必須遵守的原則 you teach us how to behave in the world.你們說，不要互相打斗

You teach us: not to fight with others, 團(tuán)結(jié)合作，互相尊重

to work things out,to respect others, 自己的東西自己收拾，不要傷害其他生物

to clean up our mess, not to hurt other creatures, 學(xué)會分享，不要貪得無厭 to share not be greedy 那么為什么你們自己愿遵守這一切呢？

Then why do you go out and do the things you tell us not to do? 不要忘記你們?yōu)槭裁磥韰⒓舆@場會議

Do not forget why you're attending these conferences 你們?yōu)榱苏l來參加這場會議 who you're doing this for 父母總是這樣安慰自己的孩子

Parents should be able to comfort their children by saying 你們決定了我們會在一個什么樣的世界里長大 You are deciding what kind of world we will grow up in 父母總是這樣安慰自己的孩子

一九九二年六月十一日，聯(lián)合國西元地球環(huán)境高峰會議，于巴西里約熱內(nèi)盧召開。一位十二歲的加拿大女孩，在冠蓋云集的世界各國領(lǐng)導(dǎo)人面前，發(fā)表了一篇僅有六分鐘的演說。她的演講，讓人們大受感動，并在全球廣為流傳，已被大家稱作「里約的傳奇演講」。

“Hello, I am Severn Suzuki speaking for E.C.O-the Environmental Children’s Organization.We are a group of 12 and 13 year-olds trying to make a difference, Vanessa Suttie, Morgan Geisler, Michelle Quigg and me.We’ve raised all the money to come here ourselves, to come 5,000 miles to tell you adults you must change your ways.Coming up here today, I have no hidden agenda.I am fighting for my future.Losing my future is not like losing an election, or a few points on the stock market.”

“I am here to speak for all generations to come.I am here to speak on behalf of the starving children around the world whose cries go unheard.I am here to speak for the countless animals dying across this planet, because they have nowhere left to go.I am afraid to go out in the sun now, because of the holes in our ozone.I am afraid to breathe the air, because I don’t know what chemicals are in it.I used to go fishing in Vancouver, my home, with my Dad until, just a few years ago, we found a fish full of cancers.And now we hear of animals and plants going extinct every day, vanishing forever.In my life, I have dreamt of seeing the great herds of wild animals, jungles and rainforests full of birds and butterflies, but now I wonder if they will even exist for my children to see.”

“Did you have to worry of these things when you were my age? All this is happening before our eyes and yet we act as if we have all the time we want and all the solutions.I’m only a child and I don’t have all the solutions, but I want you to realize, neither do you.You don’t know how to fix the holes in our ozone layer.You don’t know how to bring the salmon back up a dead stream.You don’t know how to bring back an animal now extinct.And you can’t bring back the forest that once grew where there is now a desert.If you don’t know how to fix it, please stop breaking it.”
