商務(wù)英語(yǔ)是一種被賦予了特定社會(huì)功能的英語(yǔ)變體,是特殊用途英語(yǔ)(English for Special Purpose,簡(jiǎn)稱ESP)當(dāng)中的一個(gè)分支,主要應(yīng)用于商業(yè)環(huán)境當(dāng)中。商務(wù)英語(yǔ)雖然是來(lái)源于通用英語(yǔ),具有一般英語(yǔ)語(yǔ)言所具備的語(yǔ)言學(xué)特征,但是,由于它的使用范圍有所限定,因此同時(shí)也表現(xiàn)出詞匯及語(yǔ)法上的獨(dú)特性。函電是商務(wù)交往中溝通聯(lián)絡(luò)、處理業(yè)務(wù)和交流信息最常用的一種方式。商務(wù)英語(yǔ)函電的特點(diǎn)及翻譯技巧總結(jié)如下:

1商務(wù)英語(yǔ)函電特點(diǎn)

1.1 風(fēng)格

以英語(yǔ)為表達(dá)載體商務(wù)英語(yǔ)函電是以英語(yǔ)為載體進(jìn)行信息傳遞與溝通的一種商務(wù)信函。在國(guó)際貿(mào)易活動(dòng)中所使用的語(yǔ)言具有風(fēng)格簡(jiǎn)練、正式嚴(yán)謹(jǐn)、客觀專業(yè)、禮貌得體等突出特點(diǎn)。隨著世界經(jīng)濟(jì)一體化步伐的加快,國(guó)際間商務(wù)合作日益加強(qiáng)。在我國(guó)加入世界貿(mào)易組織后,與其他成員國(guó)的經(jīng)濟(jì)交往日趨頻繁,對(duì)外經(jīng)濟(jì)貿(mào)易和技術(shù)合作迅速發(fā)展。國(guó)際貿(mào)易不斷發(fā)展,而商務(wù)函電在當(dāng)今世界貿(mào)易蓬勃發(fā)展之際,是國(guó)際商業(yè)交往中必不可少的手段,對(duì)外貿(mào)易的各個(gè)環(huán)節(jié)大多通過函電進(jìn)行。從建立業(yè)務(wù)關(guān)系到達(dá)成交易,執(zhí)行合同,以及執(zhí)行合同過程中的糾紛等,大都需通過函電解決。因而,現(xiàn)代國(guó)際貿(mào)易又被稱為“單據(jù)貿(mào)易”。在國(guó)際貿(mào)易的操作實(shí)務(wù)中,貿(mào)易各環(huán)節(jié)所有的交往函電都構(gòu)成重要的法律依據(jù)。特別是當(dāng)產(chǎn)生貿(mào)易糾紛時(shí),它有可能左右糾紛解決的結(jié)果。國(guó)際貿(mào)易越來(lái)越依賴于單據(jù)交換的過程,商務(wù)函電的中心化作用也日漸明顯。

與國(guó)際貿(mào)易專業(yè)知識(shí)緊密相關(guān)商務(wù)英語(yǔ)是應(yīng)用于國(guó)際貿(mào)易業(yè)務(wù)的語(yǔ)言,必須與國(guó)際貿(mào)易實(shí)務(wù)及專業(yè)相關(guān),貫穿于國(guó)際貿(mào)易合作關(guān)系的確立、詢盤、報(bào)盤、還盤、下單、簽訂合同、貨物運(yùn)輸、支付價(jià)款、客戶服務(wù)等諸多環(huán)節(jié)。這就要求國(guó)際貿(mào)易從業(yè)人員應(yīng)全面掌握國(guó)際貿(mào)易的實(shí)務(wù)知識(shí),并在函電閱讀寫作中善于靈活運(yùn)用專業(yè)知識(shí)做出正確的翻譯。

1.3 表現(xiàn)形式

表現(xiàn)形式多種多樣從內(nèi)容來(lái)看,常用的商務(wù)函電類型主要有商洽函、詢問函、答復(fù)函、請(qǐng)求函、告知函和聯(lián)系函等。從傳遞方式來(lái)看,則可以分為郵寄、快遞、電報(bào)、電子郵件以及基于互聯(lián)網(wǎng)的在線即時(shí)溝通。隨著信息技術(shù)、多媒體技術(shù)和網(wǎng)絡(luò)技術(shù)的發(fā)展,人類社會(huì)進(jìn)入了信息社會(huì),信函在業(yè)務(wù)交流中不再占主導(dǎo)地位,而是很大程度上代之以傳真、互聯(lián)網(wǎng)、電子郵件等更為迅速、方便、經(jīng)濟(jì)的通訊手段,但在信息內(nèi)容和形式來(lái)看,其基本格式、表達(dá)方式和內(nèi)容都沒有大的變化。可以說(shuō),傳真和電子郵件是一封用傳真或電子郵件方式投遞的信函。特別是隨著電子商務(wù)方式的發(fā)展,進(jìn)出口商可在網(wǎng)上輕輕松松地發(fā)廣告、報(bào)價(jià)格、下定單、簽合同、結(jié)貨款等。電子商務(wù)的應(yīng)用,是提高國(guó)際貿(mào)易效率的最有效辦法之一,電子化、網(wǎng)絡(luò)化國(guó)際貿(mào)易是國(guó)際貿(mào)易的發(fā)展方向。據(jù)在外貿(mào)行業(yè)工作的人員介紹,目前的商務(wù)交流98%使用的是E-MAIL,其余的是電傳,有時(shí)候會(huì)打打電話。

1.4 涉及文化差異

涉及文化差異商務(wù)英語(yǔ)函電主要用于國(guó)際貿(mào)易中的交易雙方的業(yè)務(wù)交流,自然與國(guó)外企業(yè)相關(guān),根本目的是實(shí)現(xiàn)跨境文化的溝通以及不同文化背景下人們的互動(dòng)。也就是說(shuō),寫一個(gè)有效的商務(wù)英語(yǔ)函電不僅僅是體現(xiàn)外貿(mào)人員運(yùn)用語(yǔ)言的能力,而且還從另一面考驗(yàn)從業(yè)人員和國(guó)際貿(mào)易伙伴的交際技巧,特別是跨越文化差異的交際能力。

1.5 具有法律規(guī)范

法律特征市場(chǎng)經(jīng)濟(jì)從根本上講是法制經(jīng)濟(jì)。特別是國(guó)際貿(mào)易中的經(jīng)濟(jì)活動(dòng)復(fù)雜,更加需要用法律進(jìn)行規(guī)范。商務(wù)英語(yǔ)函電是經(jīng)濟(jì)交往中重要工具之一,并且能夠成為國(guó)際貿(mào)易的行為證據(jù),具有突出的法律特征及一定的法律效力。體現(xiàn)在內(nèi)容中就是要遵守中國(guó)的法律法規(guī)以及貿(mào)易合作方國(guó)家的經(jīng)貿(mào)制度,使用的術(shù)語(yǔ)則要遵循國(guó)際慣例和法律法規(guī)。

2商務(wù)英語(yǔ)函電翻譯技巧

2.1 語(yǔ)言精練、用詞規(guī)范

語(yǔ)言精練、用詞規(guī)范國(guó)際貿(mào)易中的買家和賣家能夠借助精練的語(yǔ)言實(shí)現(xiàn)快速、有效的溝通。按照國(guó)際貿(mào)易慣例,使用精練的語(yǔ)言進(jìn)行信息交流是非常重要的。針對(duì)這個(gè)特點(diǎn),商務(wù)英語(yǔ)翻譯應(yīng)注意從易于理解的角度出發(fā),提高語(yǔ)句的精確度和清晰度,而不是堆砌辭藻,追求用詞的華麗。在詞匯方面,要選擇使用較為常見的字詞,以保證詞匯的國(guó)際通用性,確保函電的閱讀者能夠理解。當(dāng)然,由于商務(wù)英語(yǔ)函電代表了企業(yè)的形象,用詞也不能過于口語(yǔ)化和非正式化。尤其是涉及一些商業(yè)文書(如合同),因?yàn)榫哂蟹杉s束力,所以必須更加規(guī)范嚴(yán)謹(jǐn)。如使用prior to、preceding或者previous to而不使用before;使用supplement而不使用add to等。但在介詞方面,商務(wù)英語(yǔ)往往使用繁復(fù)的介詞短語(yǔ)來(lái)代替簡(jiǎn)單的介詞和連詞,如:用in the nature of代替like。例如:Payment by irrevocable L/C is our usual practice.After receipt of your L/C,we will effect

2.2 使用專業(yè)術(shù)語(yǔ)、英文縮寫

大量使用專業(yè)術(shù)語(yǔ)、英文縮寫和套語(yǔ)國(guó)際貿(mào)易業(yè)務(wù)在長(zhǎng)期的發(fā)展中,有許多高頻詞匯被簡(jiǎn)化、縮寫,便于人們使用在商務(wù)英語(yǔ)函電中。這些專業(yè)術(shù)語(yǔ)、英語(yǔ)縮寫詞也已被廣泛接受,并且避免了歧義。由于國(guó)際貿(mào)易的交易環(huán)節(jié)中的詢盤、報(bào)盤、貨運(yùn)、保險(xiǎn)、理賠等形式大體相同,其函電格式逐漸固定下來(lái)形成套語(yǔ)。例如,術(shù)語(yǔ)letter of credit(信用證),firm offer(實(shí)盤),demurrage(滯期費(fèi))等等。又如,縮略語(yǔ)T/T(電匯),B/L(提單),D/P(付款交單)等。再如,to draw(a draft)on someone(開具以某人為付款人的匯票).to open an L/C in one’S favor(開立以某人為抬頭的信用證)等等。在這些詞匯進(jìn)行翻譯時(shí),應(yīng)按照約定俗成盡量使用這些術(shù)語(yǔ)、縮寫和套語(yǔ)。例如:We hereby make you an offer for 2000 sets of Sewing Machines on the basis of CIF including 3%commission.(我公司給貴公司報(bào)2000臺(tái)縫紉機(jī)的到岸價(jià)格包括3%的傭金)。以“通知”或“告知”的翻譯為例,普通英語(yǔ)常用to tell來(lái)表達(dá)該概念,但在外貿(mào)函電英語(yǔ)中則經(jīng)常使用to inform,to notify,例如:Please inform US of your earliest date of shipmen.(請(qǐng)告知我公司貴公司的最早裝船日期。)需要注意的是,在對(duì)這些句子進(jìn)行翻譯時(shí),切記不能按字面意思直譯,也不能隨意自創(chuàng)一些術(shù)語(yǔ)、縮寫和套語(yǔ)。因此,譯者要提高國(guó)際貿(mào)易的專業(yè)水平,從文獻(xiàn)資料、專業(yè)期刊甚至是新聞報(bào)道中留意收集專業(yè)術(shù)語(yǔ)、英語(yǔ)縮寫和各種套語(yǔ),并加以靈活的應(yīng)用,使翻譯流暢,清晰。

2.3 使用禮貌用語(yǔ)

“不勝其煩”的禮貌用語(yǔ)中國(guó)是個(gè)一個(gè)禮儀之邦,悠久的歷史文明造就了中國(guó)人熱情、友善、彬彬有禮的傳統(tǒng)。在國(guó)際貿(mào)易交往中,同樣十分講究禮節(jié),函電中常常使用到禮貌用語(yǔ)。禮貌用語(yǔ)主要是要表達(dá)對(duì)對(duì)方尊重和禮貌,而將信息傳遞的功能退居其次。對(duì)于初次接受商務(wù)英語(yǔ)函電翻譯的人來(lái)說(shuō),不勝其煩的禮貌用語(yǔ)似乎有些多余。但實(shí)際上,如果掌握了禮貌用語(yǔ)的翻譯規(guī)律就能很輕松的完成翻譯了,并對(duì)函電翻譯的整體架構(gòu)有所幫助。例如,以表達(dá)感謝內(nèi)容為主的函電是商務(wù)活動(dòng)中較為常見的一種函電格式。這種函電的開頭禮貌就有十余種之多,主要有以下幾種:Thank you for your letter of...(謝謝貴公司的來(lái)函...)We receive with thanks your letter of(我公司收到貴公司感謝函...)We are obliged to receive your letter of...(我公司有責(zé)任在到貴公司函...)We appreciate your letter of...(我公司感謝貴公司的函...)We are very much pleased

/glad to receive your letter o f...(我公司非常高興/高興收到貴公司的函...)We have received with pleasure your letter of...(我公司高興地收到貴公司的函)再如:We will appreciate your effecting immediate shipment.(如蒙貴公司盡快完成裝運(yùn),我公司將不勝感激。)We will be obliged if you could quote US a favorable price。(貴公司如能報(bào)給我公司優(yōu)惠價(jià)格,我公司將十分感謝。)此外,在商務(wù)活動(dòng)中,當(dāng)對(duì)方?jīng)]有滿足自己的要求或無(wú)意與對(duì)方合作時(shí),禮貌用語(yǔ)能夠委婉地表達(dá)出拒絕的意思,常常起到以柔克剛的作用。因此,在翻譯時(shí),譯者要講求一定的策略,盡量把原文中強(qiáng)硬唐突的詞句翻譯為婉轉(zhuǎn)、有禮貌的英文。例如:We regret that we are not in a position to accept your offer.(我公司無(wú)法接受貴公司報(bào)盤,請(qǐng)見諒。)We regret to inform you that we are not in a position to supply you with such large demands.(我公司現(xiàn)在不能供應(yīng)如此大量的需求,甚歉。
