總的來說，便條可分為兩種：請假條(note asking for leave)和留言條(message note left)。

便條實際上是一種簡易書信，談的都是當天或三兩天內(nèi)的事。但它”麻雀雖小，五臟俱全"，包括除信內(nèi)地址以外的各項內(nèi)容，即日期、稱呼、正文、結(jié)尾客套語、簽名等。時間常常不寫年月，只寫日期或上下午，或幾點鐘。

便條一般是臨時通知、詢問事宜，往往是托人轉(zhuǎn)交或在某一場合的直接留言，不需要郵寄，所以不用信封。寫便條時要立求開門見山、三言兩語把意思表達清楚，句式簡單、用詞隨便，接近口語。
