請信可能是涉及到重要會議、活動的正式邀請，也可能是親戚、朋友之間的非正式邀請。因而，邀請信可能是一封公務(wù)信函，也可能是一封私人信函。前者要求文體正式，措辭莊重；而后者要親切熱情，語言要盡量口語化。
