大雄寶殿始建于唐朝垂拱二年(公元686年),先后經過唐、南宋、元、明幾次受災與重建,現存建筑物是明代崇禎十年(公元1637年)遺物。大殿通高20米,面寬九間,進深六間,面積達1387.75平方米,大殿出拱深遠,外觀雄渾,保存唐朝宏模巨制、巍峨壯觀的建筑風格。

大殿正中供奉的是御賜佛像毗盧遮那佛,漢譯大日如來,是佛教密宗的最高神抵。其兩旁是五代王審邽修大殿時增塑的四尊大佛,依次為東方香積世界阿閦佛,南方歡喜世界是寶生佛,西方極樂世界阿彌陀佛,北方蓮花世界成就佛,合稱五方佛,也叫五智如來。這五尊大佛金光閃爍,衣紋清晰,神容慈祥,法相莊嚴,雙手分別作說法、施與、接引、禪定等相,工藝精巧,令人嘆絕。五方佛的脅侍有文殊、普賢、阿難、迦葉以及觀音、勢至、韋馱、關羽、梵王、帝釋等諸天菩薩、護法神將共10尊。在大殿后正中供奉著密宗六觀音的首座圣觀音以及善才、龍女和兩翼神態各異的十八羅漢。開元寺歷代住持皈宗不一:有法相宗、律宗、凈土宗、密宗、禪宗等宗派,而大殿卻能保持這種罕見的規制,這既值得夸耀,也是值得研究的。

原山門馬戲臺因筑公路被拆毀,1990年3月由臺灣鹿港天后宮暨諸委員捐資重建。今移清代晉江縣學橫星門為山門、面闊五開間,牌樓式造型,雕花漆繪木構斗拱,青石龍柱,兩側石雕麒麟,螭虎窗,屋頂重檐四坡面,屋脊反翹瓷雕八龍二鱷,角脊作成鳳尾伸展而卷曲,線條柔和優美,整體結構華麗壯觀。戲臺連接于山門后檐,坐南朝北,木構藻井頂蓋。雕脊畫枋,小巧玲瓏,具有泉州獨特藝術風格。

緊接山門兩側為東西厥建筑,所謂“秦宮漢闕”以示天后宮之尊。建筑為二層樓閣,面臨通衢,兩樓高聳,樓上分置鐘鼓,樓下塑造千里眼,順風耳二神像,威武莊嚴。

天后正殿,雖歷經滄桑,但明清木構建筑至今依舊保存完好,而且保留來代構件。正殿占地面積635.5平方米;筑于臺基座,高出地面1米,采用花崗巖石砌筑的須彌座,束腰處浮雕“鯉魚化龍”、雄獅、文房四寶“八駿云火”、仙家法器、鶴舞云中、寶蓋蓮花等圖為二度空間動態藝術造型、雕刻刀法熟練,生動活潑,表現其神職至高無上與教屬。殿內木梁骨架,立于圓形花崗巖石柱,柱頭浮雕仰蓮連珠斗,挑出斗拱承托梁架作九架粱,建筑結構比較特別,空間變化很豐富,門窗彎枋雀替,雕花精致細密,紋飾豐富多采既有幾何圖案,又有花卉水族,鳥獸人物,托木部位有鳳凰戲牡丹,壽梁中作如意訪心,表現女性神廟。殿內油漆用朱地畫“暖八仙”之一的鐘離及如意相間圖案,其綠地雕彩西蕃蓮及喜鵲登梅圖案,有吉祥的象征,有的圖案作異獸,寓意“益壽”。殿內礎浮雕,更是琳瑯滿目,八駿、八寶、傅古鳥龍及各種花卉,表現著水族魚龍騰空翻浪,與百花爭妍,這都是表現道教主題的圖案,以福祿壽吉祥物作襯托,呈現仙家的非凡境界。

殿頂筑九脊重檐四面落水的歇山式,正脊是天后殿至高點,兩端五彩瓷型雙龍戲珠,造型精美,光澤鮮艷,表現整個大脊龍的至高題材,四岔脊頭組合鳳凰圖案,對應大脊成龍鳳呈祥,背面作人物故事,配以龍鳳、麒麟,玄武、雙虎、體現了吉祥如意,慶賀長壽的象征,為閩南建筑藝術之一絕。

東西兩廊及兩軒和寢殿,均由國家文物局立案撥出專款依!日復原修繕。東西兩廊原置配神二十四司,現改為閩臺關系史博物館陳列室。寢殿又稱后殿,地勢比正殿高出1米多,兩側突出部位設為翼享,左右齋館。整座殿字系明代大木構建筑,屋蓋為兩坡面的懸山楔,面闊七間,35.1米,進深19.8米,高8米許,木質梁架粗大古樸,大木柱置于浮雕仰蓮瓣花崗巖的圓形石礎之上,殿前檐柱保存一對十六面青石雕的元代印度教寺石柱。估計是明代翻修時稱置。柱上接木柱,刻有楹聯“神功護海國,水德配乾坤“。正面原有懸掛明代大書法家張瑞圖書“后德配天”的橫匾,目前正在修建中,屬國家木構建筑之瑰寶。

距泉州市區南門外19公里的晉江余店蘇內村,有一座萬山峰,又名萬石山、華表山,為我國僅存完整的摩尼教遺跡。因古用草構屋,故曰草庵。摩尼教又名明教,公元三世紀波斯人摩尼所開創,摩尼(公元216-276年)生于南巴比倫安眠王族家庭,他以拜火教為信奉基本,接收____、佛教和古巴比倫的宗教思維,創建了摩尼教。其教于唐代傳入泉州,稱為明教,崇敬光亮,倡導喧擾,反對黑暗和壓迫。古代遺址為元代修建物,據考古發明,宋代摩尼教已在這里運動。明代禁絕,此處鄉民仍以佛教崇拜,保留完全。摩尼教寺緊依華表山麓,內有僧尼方丈,本來庵前還有一座佛教寺,已廢,近年又重建,面目一新。花木、果樹相映,景致非常精美清凈,為一番別致風景。草庵寺依山崖傍筑,修筑情勢為石構單檐歇山式,四架椽,面闊三開間,間寬1?67米,進深二間3.04米,屋檐下用橫梁單排華拱承托屋蓋,簡略古樸。其中最為可貴的是庵內依崖石雕一尊摩尼光佛,石浮雕摩尼跌坐神像,作圓圈淺龕,直徑1.68米,坐像身長1.52米,寬0.83米,頭部比較特殊。浮現輝綠巖(青斗石)色彩,長方形面貌0.32X0.25米,背有光芒射紋飾,出現花崗巖石質,披發披肩,端坐蓮壇,面相圓潤,眉彎稍為隆起,嘴唇薄,嘴角線深顯,構成下額圓突,顯得安祥自若;身穿寬袖僧衣,胸懷打結帶,無扣,結帶用圓飾套束蝴蝶形,而向兩側下垂于腳部,雙手相疊平放,手心向上置于膝上,情態肅穆慈悲,衣褶儉樸流利,用對稱的紋飾表示時期作風。這是目前世界僅存的一尊摩尼教石雕佛像,列為全國重點文物維護單位。

在佛龕的左上角陰刻一段文字“謝店市信士陳真澤破寺,喜舍本師圣像,祈薦考妣早生佛地者。至元五年戌月日記”。五行楷書,34字,字徑2.5X2.5厘米。在右上角還有陰刻比擬毛糙的文字“興化路羅山境姚興祖,奉舍石室一完。祈薦先君正卿姚汝堅三十三宴,妣郭氏五九太孺,繼母黃十三娘,先兄姚月澗,四學世生界者。”這些文字價值性很高,是目前世界獨一摩尼光佛造像跟庵寺建造年代可借的文字佐證,十分寶貴,同時也是研討泉州明教的一手歷史資料。

在這草庵遺址前真個20米處,曾經出土一塊元代完整的黑釉碗和60多件殘瓷片。這件完整的黑釉碗,口徑18.5厘米,高6.5厘米,碗內底部在燒制時便刻有“明教會”三字,字徑6.5厘米左右,其余殘瓷片同樣分辨刻有“明”、“教”、“會”三個字樣,這是當時泉州明教會活動情形的主要發現。宋未元初時燒制這種黑釉碗,在晉江磁灶為數較多,泉州市區近郊也有同類型的發現,闡明羅山草庵摩尼教遺址的文字記載與黑釉“明教會”的瓷碗相印證。泉州的摩尼教活動于元代是比較公然性的。解釋泉州的明教是以佛為崇拜而風行的。據傳有泉州十八位讀書士子住于草庵勤懇讀書,常于此浮現佛的形象,說是文殊菩薩的顯影,因而在摩尼光佛坐像兩側有弘一法師手書木刻對聯“石壁光明相傳為文佛顯影”,“史乘記錄于此著名賢讀書”。

明朝太祖朱元璋依附明教篡奪政權,并采取明教的“明”定國號,然而又擔憂明教要挾他的統治,即所謂“又嫌其教門上逼國號,寅其徒,毀其宮”。所以明初明教極盛一時又轉入機密活動,融會于道、佛教的民間崇拜。但仍于明正統年刻摩尼教的教義信條原出地方有。

安平橋全座石構,用花崗巖和沙石構筑的梁式石橋,橫跨晉江安海和南安水頭兩重鎮的海灘,始建于南宋紹興八年(公元1138年),前后歷經十三年告成,后經明清兩代均有修繕,現為國家撥款依舊重修保留原狀,聞名天下。據《晉江縣志》記載:“晉江、南安之界,舊日以舟渡,宋紹興八年,僧祖派始筑石橋未就,二十一年來趙令衿成之,釃水三百六十二道(即分水道為三百六十二孔),長八百十有一丈,寬一丈六尺……”目前修繕后橋全長為20xx米,橋面寬3米至3.6米,以巨型石板鋪架橋面,兩側設有欄桿。橋板又闊又厚,最長者可達十余米,每間用板石七、八條,皆是堅實的花崗巖石。而這些橋板石從哪里開采而來的,應該是泉州府附近的石窟,但需要用水運。據說有私家族譜記載,這樣的巨石,多是咫尺相望的金門島開采海運而來的。橋墩筑法,用長條石和方形石橫縱疊砌,呈四方形、單邊船形、雙邊船形三種形式,尚存331座,狀如長虹,為中古時代世界上最長的梁式石橋,故有“天下無橋長此橋”的美贊。此外,長橋的兩旁,還置有形式古樸的石塔和石雕佛像,其欄桿柱頭還雕刻著維妙維肖的雌雄石獅與護橋將軍石像,以夸張的手法,雕刻表現得非常別致,皆為南來的代表作。

整座橋上面的東、西、中部分別置有五座“憩享”,以供人休息,并配有菩薩像。兩翼水中筑有對稱方形石塔四座,圓形翠堵婆塔一座,塔身雕刻佛祖,面相豐滿慈善。中亭二尊護橋將軍,軀高1.59至1.68米,頭戴盔,身著甲,手執劍,雕刻形象威武,這都是宋代石雕藝術的精華。

當時主持建橋的趙令衿筑成天下長橋而高興地寫下一首詩:

為問安平道,驅本夜已分;

人家無犬吠,門巷有爐熏;

月照新耕地,山收不斷鄉;

梅花迎我笑,書報小東君;

有“安平橋”原有篆書豐碑,已廢。據清人龔顯增《亦囪脞牘》載:“丁丑由安平趨漳郡,道出西橋,見篆書豐碑,幾立橋上……碑題‘安平橋’篆書三字,字徑二尺,配搭勻整,氣象崚嶒,旁款一行,正書云‘右迪功郎南安縣尉陳大方立’,刊者劉長岳,大方紹興末任南安縣尉。”

“安平橋這一偉大的橋梁工程是繼聞名天下的海內第一橋的洛陽橋(又名萬安橋),以工程之艱巨,為世界首創的“筏型基礎”,而產生泉州府地之建橋熱,成為泉州“橋梁甲天下”。安平橋則以長度上被歷代所贊譽,以“臥龍“、“巨虹”的壯麗稱號,聞名海內外。在明代被泉州人稱為“學問最通”陳紫峰,有一天集諸文人周游安平橋,正遇聚雨,他們都在橋上閑聊長橋勝景,隨即作對聯:“暴雨驟傾萬斛珍珠浮水面,長虹多掛一條金帶束天腰。”

在橋頭還有一座磚塔和觀音堂,塔高達22米,為五層六角形空心建筑,南宋時所創建。為什么在南宋,晉江的一鎮有這么多資財創建這么偉大的橋梁工程,據有關史料記載:“安海鎮”于府南六十里,古名“灣海”,宋初始改為“安”、曰“安海市”,西曰“新市”,東曰“舊市”。海泊至,州遣吏攫稅于此,號“石開津”,又據明代編號的《安海志》稱,古時安海人善于漂洋過海發展海上貿易,宋元時期,商則襟帶江湖,足跡遍天下,南海明珠,越裳翡翠,無所不有,文身之地,雕題之國,無所不到……這都說明宋時安海海外通商之繁榮景況,安平橋之興更是當時海外交通發達,社會經濟繁榮的實物標志。同時也看出泉州勞動人民的建筑智慧。

當代詩人郭沫若干年間特來安平橋參觀,留下律詩一首。

五里橋成陸上橋,鄭藩舊邸蹤全消;

英雄氣魄垂千古,勞動精神漾九霄;

不信君謨真夢醋,愛看明儼偶題糕;

復臺得意誰能識,開辟荊榛第一條!

由于時代久遠,海港的變遷,海上的橋變成陸上的橋,如今國家撥出專款重修,恢復舊貌,我們一到長虹般的長橋,總要漫步觀賞,為興建泉州長橋功勞而贊嘆!
