Maybe most of us didn’t realize that tomorrow is the fourth Thursday of November.Yeah, tomorrow is Thanksgiving Day.Thanksgiving Day is a traditional American holiday.Now, many places around the word also celebrate this holiday include us.In American, on the fourth Thursday of each November, families and friends gather together for the occasion to celebrate with a traditional turkey dinner, usually in the mid-afternoon.Thanksgiving originated as a celebration of the year's harvest and is similar to the Mid-Autumn Festival in China.Thanksgiving Day is most closely connected with the earliest history of the country.In 1620, the settlers, or Pilgrims sailed to America on the May flower, seeking a place where they could have freedom of worship.After a tempestuous two-month voyage they landed at in icy November, what is now Plymouth, Massachusetts.During their first winter, over half of the settlers died of starvation or epidemics.Those who survived began sowing in the first spring.All summer long they waited for the harvests with great anxiety, knowing that their lives and the future existence of the colony depended on the coming harvest.Finally the fields produced a yield rich beyond expectations.And therefore it was decided that a day of thanksgiving to the Lord be fixed.Years later, President of the United States proclaimed the fourth Thursday of November as Thanksgiving Day every year.The celebration of Thanksgiving Day has been observed on that date until today.President George Washington declared that the people of the United States should observe “a day of public thanksgiving and prayer” on Thanksgiving.The pattern of the Thanksgiving celebration has never changed through the years.The big family dinner is planned months ahead.On the dinner table, people will find apples, oranges, chestnuts, walnuts and grapes.There will be plum pudding, mince pie, other varieties of food and cranberry juice and squash.The best and most attractive among them are roast turkey and pumpkin pie.They have been the most traditional and favorite food on Thanksgiving Day throughout the years.Thanksgiving today is, in every sense, a national annual holiday on which Americans of all faiths and backgrounds join in to express their thanks for the year' s bounty and reverently ask for continued blessings.Thanks to the Native Americans and the Pilgrims who created this idea of a day of Thanksgiving all those live in the New World can be thankful for all we have and share the joy with our family members and friends.For us, we needn't have a big turkey dinner with families in Thanksgiving Day, but we should keep a grateful heart for all of the world all the time.May be we feel we are under much pressure and misery now.and may be we have to have dealings with sth we don't like.But from the passage ,can bad luck be explained,we can know it ususllly because our psychological factor that cause us feel unlucky.Why don't we pay more attention to the beauty of the world.Thanks for the fresh air,the warm sunshine,the groud we touch and the full communal facilities.The necessary people that we should thanks for are our parents.It is them who bring us to the world.For some parents especially our mother,we are even as important as

themselves.Although we are not together, we can send them a short message at the midnight just as we wait until the midnight to say happy birthday to our friends.“My dear mother,today is thanksgiving day,i will at your hand forever.” They would be very happy all day long because of it.

Smoking

Smoking should be prohibited, for the World Health Organization point out that disease linked to smoking kills at least 2,500,000 people each year.Smoking leads to not only lung cancer, but many other diseases such as heart attacks, sore throat, headache, chronic bronchitis, etc.Smoking not only is harmful to the smokers themselves, but also results in the deaths of non-smokers.Statistics show that passive smoking is causing 3000 to 5000 lung cancer deaths a year among American non-smokers.An American scientist estimated that smokers who smoke average a package a day for 20 years will lose about eight years of their lives.Smoking makes the indoor environment far more polluted than the outdoor environment.Pregnant women who smoke run the risk of having deformed babies.Smoking is an expensive habit, for a smoker who consumes a package of cigarettes a day will have to spend at least 300 Yuan each month, more than one third of average salary in China.Children exposed to parental cigarette smoking are put at a higher risk of developing lung diseases later in their lives.In the countryside, some smokers share the same pipe, which is even unhealthier.Smoking speeds up the process of aging.Smoking not only pollutes the air but also makes the streets dirty, for some smokers flick the ash off their cigarettes and throw the cigarette ends everywhere.Smokers help increase the revenue of the

government.Nicotine can produce tranquilizing effect during high emotional situation, therefore helps to calm people down, and wipe out their loneness and fatigue.Smokers should have the right to keep their habits.

Good morning ladies and gentleman.My name is Jane.I’d like to talk to you today about the topic of Traffic Jams in Beijing.And later my partner TOM will give her advices about How to Solve the Problem of Heavy Traffic.The purpose of this talk is to analysis the problem of traffic jams and tries to find some feasible ways to deal with it.I live near the East Fourth Ring road.Last week, I went to Xidan, the biggest business center in Beijing.I started at 1:00 that afternoon.When I arrived home, it was about 8:00 in the evening.I only use nearly 3 hours on shopping.That means I waste almost 4 hours on the way.What a terrible Traffic condition.What caused the traffic jam? In my opinion, there are several reasons.First, there are too many cars on the roads leading to slow traffic.Up to now, the total number of the motor vehicle in Beijing has reached at 4,900,000.Second, many people do not have good driving habits.They used to change lane very frequently, or brake suddenly, which are

very ease to cause an accident.Additionally, the public traffic is not enough, especially at the rush time.So people have to drive to work with their private cars, which leads to traffic jams.XUJIA:

Nowadays, people in Beijing are always complaining about the heavy traffic.It has seriously influenced people's daily life and economic development.To solve the problem,some people suggest that more roads should be built.Because in this way, the traffic density can be reducedhence speeding up the flow of buses and cars.But the new roads and streets will be filled with many cars and buses soon.Others advise that limit the number of private cars.This can decrease the traffic flow.But on the other hand, this will affect the consumption and make buses more crowded.In my opinion, the number of private cars should be put under control.And at the same time, buses should have their

own special routes which cannot be used by other vehicles.Besides, underground train and city train should be developed quickly.In addition, I think that drivers should cultivate good driving habits, and more traffic polices in the important crossroads should be added at the peak time.Thus, traffic accident scan be handled as quickly as possible.At the end of our presentation, let me just run over the key points again.Traffic jams was made by several reasons, and they are the most serious problems in our city.Maybe there are several solutions to this problem, butfor ourselves, to drive more carefully, more reasonably, maybe is another way to decrease the traffic jams.That’s all, thank you very much.
