Book Review on The Old Man And The Sea
“A man is not made for defeat.A man can be destroyed but not defeated.”These two sentences are so familiar to us.It’s spoken by Santiago, the hero of The Old Man And The Sea.When I first read this book in Grade 5, I was shocked by his brave and staunch spirit. This book tells us a story about an old fisherman called Santiago. He had been fishing 84 days without catching any fish at all. However, he made his mind to get a big fish.In the 85th day, after a long fighting, heeventually caught a big Marlin fish, which will be an honor to him.Unluckily, several sharks came to the boat and ate the dead fish.Although Santiago struggled to fight with them, tired out, they ate it at last.In the end, Santiago carried the shell of his Marlin fish home. This book tells the story with the time order, using a unique tough style. It perfectly shows the hero Santiago’s strong mind with aconciseplot and lively words. On the other hand, Hemingway tried harder to describe the big body of the Marlin fish and the fierceness of the sharks. It stresses his character in return. In my opinion, this book is not famous for its themes, but also for its writing style, a kind of tough style. The brave fisherman Santiago is also an image to reflect the author himself.Hemingway has attended the world war and got injured several times. So this book is like an autobiography of him.In my opinion, Hemingway and his hero Santiago represent the kind of man, who has full energy to overcome any obstacles, brave spirit to respond to any challenge and a strong mind never to give up.Sometimes life is like a round of push and pull. The winner will never be the weak or the timid, it belongs to the hero.Theobstacles in your life are like the big Marlin fish and the huge sharks. It is actually tough and endless. But try not being afraid and never give up.Each obstacle is a kind of challenge, thus our life is colorful.Even if they defeat
you, don’t step back.Think about Santiago’s words “A man is not made for defeat.A man can be destroyed but not defeated.” You will eventually defeat your enemy one day.

On summer vacation of this year, I studied in novel “ old man and sea ” of Hemingway , famous writer of U.S.A.,.I admire the old fisherman's will in the novel very much, he lets me understand that a person must have unremitting spirit, could succeed. What the novel is described is an old fisherman almost the sixty years old, when go to sea and fish alone once, have angled to a big fish, but can not draw. After tough fisherman and fish have socialized for a few days, just find this is a big Malin's fish which exceeds several times of one's own fishing boat, though know perfectly well that it is very difficult to win , does not give up yet.Because big Malin fish fishlike smell of wound attract odd herds of shark vie for the food again later, but the old man is still unwilling to give up like this, stress the tight encirclement finally , take the large fish back to fishing port , let other fishmen admire it endlessly. The old fisherman thinks that as I read “: It is really too close from here to coast, perhaps there are bigger fish in the farther place ……” When, admire very much because this old fisherman in the persons, because play not for some fishing he already at this moment I, but he is not satisfied with the existing state of affairs , but advance towards greater goal.Seeing us again, meet some little difficulties at ordinary times , all of us complain bitterly. We are the future of the motherland, should be as ambitious as this old man, go to pursue well , greater goal.Read as me “ big Malin fish is it enclose light fishing boat move about , is it get mast to twine cable fast to begin, old man right hand hold steel fork high , jump out in a flash , affording to try one's best above water in it, a sound of wail has finished the life of the loud fish, it floats on the surface of water silently ……”When, the I one heart is too fall like pieces of stone not big.I admire that kind of fearing of the old man at all , unremitting spirit very much, though know rival's strength is very strong , but he has not shrunk back at all , meets the difficulty.Just because there is this kind of spirit, the old fisherman has obtained the victory of the trial of strength of this life and death. We should study the old fisherman's spirit too in life, do the thing and is not afraid of the difficulty , could achieve success.Read big blood offensive smell of fish smell one shark , fall over each other to visit to vie for the food, left hand of old man pull a muscle just, he can only use right hand, can weapon attacked to used for defend oneself with stick , mouth of swordfish that catch everything, and has driven away this herd of shark finally. But big meat of fish take into big half already, but old man criticize one's own left hand “ when the work this when have a rest ” humorously also, I am subdued by old man's optimistic spirit too.In life, some losses are unavoidable, we should treat the optimistic attitude , can't worry about petty gain or loss. Finally, the novel sees with a teenager that old fisherman has 18 feet of big long Malin's fish totally in the tolerance , the ones that have described this fish are enormous again, prove that old fisherman's difficulty overcome is big, than ordinary.Old fisherman's spirit that makes great efforts to struggle fearless of danger and difficulty that the novel has been extolled, we should be like him too, can' t be satisfied with the current situation , should be positive upwards, it should be unremitting to do anything, it must not give up halfway to meeting difficulty should meet the difficulty.Only in this way, we could obtain greater success and victory.

作業:The Old Man and the Sea
I had read this novel when I was in middle school.I came across it in a library and after opening the book I continued reading till the last page. It’s amazing that there should be such a wonderful story.Later, I learned some parts of the story from our Chinese book and the teacher told us to try to feel something that the author was expressing. Then, I became confused for all I noticed was the story itself. Now I read the novel again, but in English.I have been familiar with the plot and many details in the story, and I could still recognize them while reading them in English. The story goes like this: there’s an old man in Cuba named Santiago who was a fisherman. He had been fishing hard in the Gulf Stream for 84 days but got nothing. In the previous days a boy named Manolin was fallowing him as a company, but the kind boy was force to leave the old man by his parents who thought that the old man was unlucky. However, Santiago continued to go fishing alone in the eighty-fifth day.The boy cared about him and prepared things for him.The old man left the land early in the morning and in this very day his luck finally came—a large marlin bit his bait and couldn’t escape. But the fish was so big and heavy that it pulled the skiff or a little ship as far as it could do.The old man was very excited and determined to defeat it.So they started a battle which lasted for days and nights.First the fish was in charge, it swam fast with great strength and the old man could only pull the rope with great efforts. When the old man was tired he ate bonito or dolphin to keep strong and he started to talk to himself so that he would not feel weak in the mind. The marlin grew tired gradually and it began to circle. The old man knew that he was to have the fish.He burnt all his energy to pull the rope while the fish was circling under the water. The fish came nearer and nearer to his skiff, and then the old man hit the fish with a harpoon and finally got it.The fish was huge and it was longer than his skiff. He tight it alongside the skiff with ropes and lay down in the stern to have a rest. However, on the way back the blood from the scar of the fish speared in the sea water and then the sharks came. The old man was not afraid and used every weapon to fight with them. There were five or six times of attacking from those sharks and each time they ate lots of fine meat from the marlin. The old man fought again and again to protect his fish and used harpoon, oar, knife, rudder and so on to beat the sharks. They fought all the way back home and in the end the old man gave it up because the fish was almost eaten up and he was exhausted. The old man finally came back after sailing out for so far and so long a time.It was deep in the night;he left the skiff and the fish and went to bed.In his dream, he saw lions playing on the beach in the coast of Africa. The story ended. It is said that the author, Ernest Hemingway who is a great American writer wrote the novel in only eight weeks, basing on one of his friend’s true experience. He created the figure of the old man which was later called by people “tough man” and showed his life attitude and spiritual world. The most well-known sentence of this novel and also the topic of it is that: “man is not made for defeat.A man can be destroyed but not defeated.” These words become belief of many readers. In my opinion, the whole story is about a battle between an old man and the sea, both of which are considered to have symbolic meanings according to critics. The old man once was so energetic and strong but couldn’t get harvest from the sea.He used his old body and strong mind to fight against nature and challenge his fate.He did win a bit—he got the large fish, but he lost totally because he carried back only the skeleton of the fish with his hands bleeding.

hand, he had done all he could to fight against all unlucky things and didn’t lose his face.He behaved like a real man, a tough man. That’s what’s most important in a battle.Hemingway is famous for his special writing style and skills. His words are short but tough, and people describe this as “telegraph style”.And from this typical work of his I can easily find out something worth noticing.I like the first paragraph very much because it reads so natural and attracting and it will lead you into the situation as soon as possible. It writes: “He was an old man who fished alone in a skiff in the Gulf Stream and he had gone eighty-four days now without taking a fish.In the first forty days a boy had been with him.But after forty days without a fish, the boy’s parents had told him that the old man was now definitely and finally salao, which is the worst form of unlucky and the boy had gone at their orders in another boat which caught three good fish the first week.”
Some features can be seen that verbs and nouns are used mostly, but not adjectives. This will make the novel clean and hard like bones and easy to understand. The novel is not long and not difficult to read in English, and I think we can learn to be tough like Santiago when facing with hard times in our life, which is the best solution we should choose in a bad situation.“網上英語自主學習”課程總計36課時,平均每4個課時完成一個學習任務,學生按要求完成相應的作業并對自己的學習過程進行自我評價,如,甲、乙…
