As we all known , Oliver Twist is the world's masterpiece by prominent British author Charles Dickens. Thus , I spent a month reading it.When I finished this book, I could not calm the mood for a long time. The hero of this novel was Oliver Twist, an orphan, whose mother was died after giving birth to him.So he was thrown into a world full of poverty and crime. He suffered enormous pain, such as hunger, thirst, beating and abuse. While reading the tragic experiences of the little Oliver, I was shocked by his sufferings and felt for the poor boy.In addition , the charitable figures whom Dickens created in the novel are really what we need in life. They showed love and care to others, just as the gentle rain from the sky fell upon the earth, which was carved into my heart deeply.Mr.Brownlow is one such person. He known Oliver Twist by accident, although there were many things happening between them ,dramatically, they came across each other again a few years later.Without hesitation, he took Oliver home for the second time not caring if he had done something evil. What Mr.Brownlow did taught us a lesson , just as the old saying went , “To error is human;to forgive divine.”, Therefore, we ought to give people a second chance no matter what they might have done. That’s also a substantial part of loving and caring others.Mrs.Maylie ,Miss Rose and Nancy are also these kind of people , who are Oliver’s other

benefactors. In the novel, though the young Oliver again and again fell for conspiracies of those hideous thieves, who tried to torture Oliver’s body and poisoned Oliver’s heart intensely, he always lived on and tried hard to seek for his own life. Then I realized what supported him all through were actually beliefs. In most cases, what you believe is what you’ll become.Believe that you are unlimited, that you can do anything you commit to doing, and when you do, your accomplishments will know no bounds. You control your beliefs and that is how you ultimately control your life. It’s all dictated by your attitude. There is no doubt that we should learn form Oliver , no matter what we meet , we can’t give up.What’s more ,we must believe in that the goodness eventually can conquer devil. All in all , Oliver Twist is well worth reading.

Book Report

Charles Dickens, Oliver Twist. The People’s Literature Publishing House,1999.Oliver Twist is a story by Charles Dickens that takes place in the middle of the 19th century. It the story of a young orphan named Oliver Twist. His mother died while giving birth in an old workhouse. He has moved around through different orphanages and finally runs away to the streets of London. On the way to London he meets a nice boy named Jack Dawkins, also known as the Dodger. The Dodger gave the poor orphan a place to stay and something to eat and drink.Oliver found out that his new “friends” were thieves and they forced Oliver to help them with a robbery. They were supposed to use Oliver to sneak into a house through a small opening and unlock the front door. The owners were awakened and Oliver got shot.Oliver's partners in crime fled the scene.Oliver told the owners of the house his story and they took him as their own.Oliver grew attached. The family educated him and put him to work a little. At the end of the story an old friend named Mr.Brownlow adopted him.One theme in Oliver Twist is to know your friends better. In this book Oliver met a boy named Jack Dawkins. He seemed like a nice boy and offered Oliver some food and a place to stay.Oliver got to be friends with Jack Dawkins and his friend named Charlie Bates. One day they were “going to work” when all of the sudden Jack and Charlie stole a handkerchief from an old man.The two boys were thieves! They ran away and left Oliver in the alley. When the old man realized that his handkerchief was missing he though Oliver did it.The old man started to chase Oliver and yelled out “Stop thief!Stop thief!” Jack Dawkins and Charlie Bates joined in the chase so that they did not look suspicious. They no sooner heard the cry, and saw Oliver running, than, guessing exactly how the matter stood, they issued forth with great promptitude;and, shouting 'Stop thief!' too, joined in the pursuit like good citizens. If Oliver noticed that the young boys were thieves he would not have been arrested and he would not have eventually been shot in the arm. But, because he was in need of a friend he seemed to over look the fact that the kids were thieves.Later in the story Nancy, a prostitute, betrayed her friends and her lover. She tried to warn Oliver's friends of Mr.Monks

plans.Bill Sikes her lover and colleague trusted her not to tell what went on inside the house. If he could only tell that she had a change in heart he would not have had to kill her and she wouldn't have been able to tell Oliver's friends Mr.Monks plans and where Bill Sikes. If she didn't tell Oliver's friends where Bill Sikes lived he would not have had the police after him and he would not have accidentally killed himself. So if people just knew their friends better it would have saved many people's lives and the story would have turned out different.Another theme in Oliver Twist is the friendliness of strangers.Throughout the story pure strangers were treating Oliver nicely. When Oliver was walking to London a nice boy offered Oliver a place to stay and some foodto eat.“I've got to be in London tonight;and I know a 'spectable old gentleman as loves there, wot'll give you lodging for nothink, and never ask for the change-” Even though the nice young man turned out to be a thief and was recruiting Oliver as a pickpocket, he was still being very nice.Later in the story Oliver was forced to rob a house and the owners of the house were woken up during the robbery and Oliver was shot in the arm.The owners of the house listened to Oliver and he told them that he was forced to rob their house and they took him in and cared for him. They nursed him to optimum health and they also educated him and he helped them out by doing errands in return. They also drove Oliver a full days ride to the town where Mr.Brownlow lived just to visit him.Nancy also helped out Oliver and died while in the helping process. She warned Oliver's friends about Mr.Monks plans and Bill Sikes found out and killed her.“It was a ghastly figure to look upon. The murderer staggering backward to the wall, and shutting out the sight with his hand, seized a heavy club and struck her down.” Oliver was a very lucky boy to have so many strangers that were willing to help him out.How can such a little boy who had already suffered oppressive affliction remain pure in body and mild? The reason is the nature of goodness.I think it is the most important information imlied in the novel by Dickens. He believed that goodness could conquer every difficulty.I do believe that those who are kind-hearted live more happily than those who are evil-minded.To my disappointment, nowadays some people seem to doubt the existence of the goodness in humanity. They look down on people’s honesty and kindness, thinking it foolish of people to be warm-hearted.As a result, they show no sympathy to those who are in trouble and seldom offer to help others. On the other hand, they attach importance to

money and benefit. In their opinion, money is the only real object while emotions and morality are nihility. If they cannot get profit from showing their ‘kindness’, they draw back when others are faced with trouble and even hit a man when he is down. They are one of the sorts that I really detest. That is to say a person without goodness is destined to lose everything. Therefore, I, a kind person, want to tell those ‘vermin-to-be’ to learn from the kind Oliver and regain the nature of goodness.Oliver was unlucky in the beginning of the book.Everyone he met was treating him unfairly.People were getting paid to take him away from the orphanage. He also got in trouble for something he didn't even do.But some of the times it all turns out well just like it did for Oliver.Everyone that was mean to him either died or got in trouble. And maybe that is why we say good people always get the best.

Oliver Twist byCharles Dickens-1-

The Incorruptibility of Natural Goodness

——On The Characters of Oliver and Nancy in Oliver Twist

Charles Dickens provides insight into the experience of the poor in 1830s England.Beneath the novel’s raucous humor and flights of fancy runs an undertone of bitter criticism of the Victorian middle class's attitudes toward the poor.Oliver Twist is the leading character who is the victim of the hypocrisy and venality of capitalism and fallen Charitable Institution of 1830s England. There are different opinions among people as to whether human beings are born with goodness or the opposite, sin.According to Charles Dickens, man is born an angel and what's more, natural goodness is incorruptible. The Characters of Oliver and Nancy in Oliver Twist are typical examples.First of all, Oliver Twist is incorruptible although trapped in the terrible circumstances. On the one hand, what he did could account for this tip.Oliver is an orphan living in a hypocritical workhouse from his birth.Because he can’t stand the terrible conditions in the workhouse, he escapes to London where he is trapped by Fagin who tries and teaches him to be a thief.Though treated with cruelty and surrounded by filthiness, he is still innocent and gentle. On the other hand, unlike those juvenile delinquents who talk with broken English, Oliver speaks Standard English without being polluted by the coarse surroundings. The character Nancy is another typical example.“Remarkably free and agreeable”, she is quite contradictory.Nancy is a fallen woman, to be specific, she is a prostitute. At first, when she helps Fagin and recaptures Oliver, I hold the opinion that she and those thieves are birds of a feather. But later I found I was too hasty about rushing to such a conclusion. After Nancy overhears Monks' telling Fagin his plans to destroy Oliver, she gives the secret away to Rose at the cost of her own life.In this novel, her final decision to protect Oliver reminds me of an old saying in ancient China by Mencius: human nature is good, so everyone has compassion and everyone can be emperor Yao and Shun. But how to explain that there are someone “evil”, such as Fagin and Monks who tries to kill Oliver and get a large sum of heritage compared with Oliver and Nancy who are born with incorruptible goodness? To this point, the author Charles Dickens has been criticized by many readers.I have researched many materials of Dickens's opinion about man is born with incorruptible goodness or not.To my surprise, he claimed that a corrupt environment is the source of vice. But in this novel, I find that although surrounded by evil circumstances, Oliver is compassionate and innocent all the time.So obviously, Oliver's incorruptibility undermines some of Dickens's argumentation.Oliver Twist byCharles Dickens-2-

From my point of view, goodness is a relative concept.A person who is kind and good to his relatives may seem evil from others' prospects.Because until now we have not enough stuff to support all of the people in the world. The law of survival of the fittest in natural selection and the unfairness in social system account for the “wickedness”.This also can explain the reason why some crimes seem understandable.Who is supposed to be responsible for the strange phenomenon? In Oliver Twist, the hypocritical capitalism and fallen Charitable Institution are the answers.Apart from the controversy, still I have learned much from the two characters, the main two points can be listed as follows:

For one thing, we should believe in the goodness of human beings and depression can be conquered by love and hope. The same idea can date back to the forefathers at home and abroad: the Three Character Primer begins with the classic sentence :People are born good(人之初,性本善).Greek Philosopher Socrates also claimed the same.At this point, I find myself in complete agreement with the author.I believe this is the very reason why there are so many people who would like to help others disregarding repayment. For instance, the moment people of Yushu was in trouble for the earthquake, thousands of kind people all over the world would like to lend a helping hand voluntarily. For another, the effect of the environment is not that irresistible. We should think twice before arriving at the conclusion: he that lies down with dogs must rise up with flea.To be specific, it is not sensible to turn someone away just because he was born in coarse environment.Just like the Song Zhou's the article praises the Lotus as the gentlemen's flowers, which share the same feature with both Oliver and Nancy, and that is growing up from the filthy mud without being polluted(出淤泥而不染).

第四篇:霧都孤兒 英文讀后感

The author who himself was born in a poor family wrote this novel in his

twenties with a view to reveal the ugly masks of those cruel criminals and to expose the horror and violence hidden underneath the narrow and dirty streets in London. The hero of this novel was Oliver Twist, an orphan, who was thrown into a world full of poverty and crime. He suffered enormous pain, such as hunger, thirst, beating and abuse. While reading the tragic experiences of the little

Oliver, I was shocked by his sufferings.I felt for the poor boy, but at the same time I detested the evil Fagin and the brutal Bill.To my relief, as was written in all the best stories, the goodness eventually conquered devil and Oliver lived a happy life in the end.One of the plots that attracted me most is that after the theft, little Oliver was allowed to recover in the kind care of Mrs.Maylie and Rose and began a new life.He went for walks with them, or Rose read to him, and he worked hard at his lessons. He felt as if he had left behind forever the world of crime and hardship and poverty. How can such a little boy who had already suffered oppressive affliction

remain pure in body and mind? The reason is the nature of goodness.I think it is the most important information implied in the novel by Dickens-he believed that goodness could conquer every difficulty.Although I don’t think goodness is omnipotent, yet I do believe that those who are kind-hearted live more happily than those who are evil-minded.For me, the nature of goodness is one of the most necessary character for a

saying goes, ‘The fragrance always stays in the hand that gives the rose’, he who is with goodness undoubtedly is a happy and useful person.People

receiving his help are grateful to him and he also gets gratified from what he has done, and thus he can do good to both the people he has helped and himself. To my disappointment, nowadays some people seem to doubt the existence of the goodness in humanity. They look down on people’s honesty and kindness, thinking it foolish of people to be warm-hearted.As a result, they show no

《霧都孤兒》英文讀后感1

Learn to love and care

Here I am sitting on a couch alone, thinking about what I have just finished reading with tears of sadness filling my eyes and fire of indignation filling my heart, which revived my exhausted soul that has already been covered by the cruelty and the selfishness of the secular world for a long time. It is truly what I felt after reading Oliver Twist, written by the prominent British author Charles Dickens.

The resonance between me and the book makes me feel not only the kindness and the wickedness of all the characters in the novel, but what this aloof society lacks, and what I lack deep inside. These supreme resources I’m talking about right now are somewhat different from minerals, oil that we usually mention. They’re abstract like feelings, and some kinds of spiritual stimulation that all of us desire anxiously from one another —— love and care. Those charitable figures whom Dickens created in the novel are really what we need in life. They showed love and care to others, just as the gentle rain from the sky fell upon the earth, which was carved into my heart deeply. Mr. Brownlow is one such person.

The other day he had one of his elaborate watches stolen

by two skilled teenage thieves, Artful Dodger and Charley Bates, and thought naturally it was Oliver, who was an orphan and forced to live with a gang of thieves, that had done it because he was the only one near by after the theft had taken place. Being wrathful, he caught Oliver, and sent him to the police station where the ill-tempered, unfair magistrates worked. Fortunately for him, Oliver was proved innocent by one onlooker afterwards. With sympathy, Mr. Brownlow took the injured, poor Oliver to his own home. There Oliver lived freely and gleefully for some months as if he were Mr. Brownlow’s own son. One day, however, Mr. Brownlow asked Oliver to return some books to the bookseller and to send some money for the new books that he had already collected. The thief Oliver once stayed with kidnapped him. After that he disappeared in Mr. Brownlow’s life. Searching for a while, Mr. Brownlow had to believe the fact that he had run away with his money. But dramatically, they came across each other again a few years later. Without hesitation, Mr. Brownlow took Oliver home for the second time not caring if he had done something evil.

Perhaps most of us would feel confused about Mr. Brownlow’s reaction. But as a matter of fact, this is just the lesson we should learn from him. Jesus said in the Bible. “Forgive not seven times, but seventy-times seven.” Why is that? Because forgiveness is our ability to remove negative thoughts and neutralize them so our energy may be spent on doing what we came here for. We cannot move forward in our future if past issues cloud our thinking. Stop put Mr. Brownlow into the list of your models. Always give people a second chance no matter what they might have done. That’s also a substantial part of loving and caring others.

then there are Mrs. Maylie and Rose, Oliver’s other benefactors. Maybe the reason they loved and cared Oliver was not because of forgiveness. In my point of view, it was trust. They had faith in Oliver when he was considered to be a filthy burglar who tried to break the front door of Maylie’s at midnight. But this wasn’t how these two ladies saw the whole thing. They denied Oliver’s crime immediately and listened attentively to Oliver’s own description of his miserable life. They were deeply touched by Oliver’s strong perseverance and astonishing vitality.

Accordingly, they remedied Oliver’s body and heart and turned him into adifferent boy. He began to wear appropriate and clean suits which were tailor-made for him and receive education.

As far as we can see, it is trust that helps us all live together without precaution. Sometimes trust can even lead us to miracles, which we often expect to come about, so why not trust? Trust yourself, trust others, and you’ll salute miracles every single day.

In most cases, what you believe is what you’ll become. Believe that you are unlimited, that you can do anything you commit to doing, and when you do, your accomplishments will know no bounds. You control your beliefs and that is how you ultimately control your life. It’s all dictated by your attitude.

In the final analysis, love and care contain numerous forms, there are love of forgiveness, love of trust, etc. but they all come from your beliefs in life. When someone tells you he’s deceived you, forgive him anyway, when someone tells you what he’s done, trust him anyway, and when you face adversities while chasing your dreams, think about your beliefs, then what hinders you will become a piece of cake in no time.

So find out “Olivers” in your life and do as Mr. Brownlow and Mrs. Maylie do: love them and care them, which cost nothing but save much. They enrich those who receive, without impoverishing those who give. They can be certain smallest words or actions, but the memory of them sometimes last forever.

Charles Dickens said:“Love makes the world go around.” These immortal words have inspired and will keep on inspiring us to chant the melody of love and to say the prayer of care forevermore. Let us, therefore, enjoy life and treat other people lovingly. These principles are the roots and foundations of beliefs supporting this article and our

Oliver Twist is a novel written by Chales Dikens .It mainly describes a little boys tough experiences .This novel reveals the authors attitude towards life in some point. Oliver Twist was an orphan who was brought up by Shelia who lived in hospice. Oliver was regarded as a bastard, which resulted lots of discrimination. In the foster home , he was on behalf of children to ask for more porridge ,which considered as a kind rude and unpolite behavior .He was confined for several days and came across another suffering.

Mr Bumble sent him to a coffin maker. In this plot ,I was attracted by the man Mr Noah who was also a servant .He played tricks on Oliver to grab some external fun .He deliberately said Olivers mother was a bitch who had a child without marriage. This kind of writing is advanced .It satirized the dark society .peoples ignorance trapped kind people all the time .In contrast,Oliver , a naive boy who existed in a horrible environment ,always kept good honest.Although he knew nothing about his mother ,he persisted in beliving his mothers kindness.A little boy owned those good quality in dark society is doubted. But it reflects the authors opinion .Love makes the world go around. This topic was proved though the novel. In an anthor plot ,Oliver entered a haunt of thieves by accident.A girl names Nacy rejected Mr Brownlows help .She had no courage to leave the haunt where people had the same fate ,especially his beloved boy Sikes. In the end ,she was beaten to death .And this plot is the trasition .It hinted that bad people are destined to compensate. For Olivers kindness ,he finally led a happy life with many kindhearted peoples help. This consequence accords with peoples common criterion.Temporarily difficulities is not terrible as long as you reasonably deal with it.And success is on the way.Whats more,we should always put love in the bottom of hearts.

《霧都孤兒》英文讀后感4

First of all, Im sorry that I havent read Dickenss novel. Ive read a tale of two cities. Its also a compressed version. I dont remember it. It is found that the biggest failure of middle school education is to pour the titles of these masterpieces to the students, but not to give them the possibility of reading. Over time, a lot of names and authors have been recorded, but none of the books have been read, and

the interest of reading has been reduced. Of course, it has something to do with the students laziness. I am a very lazy person, and I dont like reading foreign novels very much. I always feel that the translated things are wrong again, distortion is the second, and mixed with the translators personal thoughts. This movie reminds me of a long time ago, probably in high school, watching “les miserables”, are very realistic works. The tone of the movie is gray, the most common color, but it will never make people feel tired. Just like the most simple green brick and grey wall in ancient gardens, it cant compare with the red paint gate, but now we can see only the green brick and grey wall, and the red paint gate cant stand the time. One of the important reasons why I dont like reading foreign novels is that I cant remember the names of the characters, such as tonights Oliver Twist. Read “Oliver Twist”, let me be the hero of this book - Oliver. At the same time, he felt disgust and regret for the street criminals in London in the 1830s. Oliver. Tweester was born in a workhouse. Poor boy was orphaned at birth. He was thrown into a world full of poverty and crime, starved, beaten and scolded, and no one ever loved him.

Therefore, he got help from kind-hearted people who know his life experiece and got happiness. I am moved by this inspirational story and this brave, kind little boy. I think that no matter what happens to us, we can never lose hope, kindness and braveness, because these are the motivations that can support us to go on.

How can such a little boy who had already suffered oppressive affliction remain pure in body and mind? The reason is the nature of goodness. I think it is the most important information implied in the novel by Dickens-he believed that goodness could conquer every difficulty. Although I don’ t think goodness is omnipotent, yet I do believe that those who are kind-hearted live more happily than those who are evil-minded.

For me, the nature of goodness is one of the most necessary character for a person. Goodness is to humans what water is to fish. He who is without goodness is an utterly worthless person. On the contrary, as the famous saying goes, The fragrance always stays in the hand that gives the rose’,he who is with goodness undoubtedly is a happy and useful person. people receiving his help are grateful to him and he also gets gratified from what he has done, and thus he can do good to both the people he has helped and himself.

To my disappointment, nowadays some people seem to doubt the existence of the goodness in humanity. They look down on people’s honesty and kindness, thinking it foolish of people to be warm-hearted. As a result, they show no sympathy to those who are in trouble and seldom offer to help others.

On the other hand, they attach importance to money and benefit. In their opinion, money is the only real object while emotions and morality are nihility. If they cannot get profit from showing their ‘kindness’, they draw back when others are faced with trouble and even hit a man when he is down. They are one of the sorts that I really detest.

《霧都孤兒》英文讀后感8

Oliver Twist is written by Charles Dickens。

Charles Dickens is one of the greatest writers in the England。 He was bornin a poor family, but later he became famous and rich。 The famous novel --A Taleof Two Cities is written by him, too。

This novel shows us the cruelty and crime of London。 Oliver Twist, thehero, is a poor orphan。 He lived in a life filled with taunts。 Nobody loved him。With visions of his future, he decided to go to London。 He thought a new lifewas ing, but he was wrong, a group of thieves were waiting for him。

The author created a group of bad men。

Fagin, an old man, with a horribly ugly face and red hair, was the head ofthose thieves。 He tried to make Oliver be a criminal。

Bill Sikes was a cruel and evil man in the group。 He had a bad temper。

Monks, Oliver’s brother, did bad things to hurt Oliver。 He wanted to getthe legacies left by his father alone。 He paid Fagin to trap Oliver into a lifeof crime。 In fact, they were all afraid of being put into prison and beinghanged。 They can’t live happily。

Nancy, a poor girl, loved a bad man。 She had to help Bill Sikes perpetrate, because she loved him。 She had to be loyal to the criminal group, because sheloved him。 Actually, she was kind。 She helped Oliver at the risk of her life。 Ifshe hadn’t fell in love with Sikes, she would have a happy ending。

The author showed these ugly things to us, he described an ugly world。 Butthere are more kind people in the novel。

Mr。 Brownlow, an old friend of Oliver’s father, took good care ofOliver。

Mrs。 Maylie, Harry Maylie’s mother, saved Oliver of his life。

Miss Rose is the aunt of Oliver, in fact。

They all protect Oliver from hurt。

Oliver was unlucky to meet so many evil people, but he was luckier to gethelp from so many kind people。

In the end of the novel, all the evil people were punished。 Oliver got whathe should get。 Rose married Harry Maylie and they lived happily。 All the kindpeople have a happy ending。

Righteousness can always beat evil。 I think this is what the author wantsto tell。 Although there are many ugly things in the world, we must believe thatrighteousness can always beat evil。

We must store kindness even though we are in ugly situation。 One is poor ifhe doesn’t have kindness。 One is rich if he has kindness。 So please store yourkindness in your mind。

What’s more, the novel also tells us to be brave。 Oliver was brave enoughto overe all the problems he had met。 No matter how difficult the problem is, wecan’t give up, we must try our best to solve it。

From Oliver Twist , I have learnt a lot 。It’s really a good novel。

This kind of writing is advanced .It satirized the dark society .people's ignorance trapped kind people all the time .In contrast,Oliver , a naive boy who existed in a horrible environment ,always kept good honest.Although he knew nothing about his mother ,he persisted in beliving his mother's kindness.A little boy owned those good quality in dark society is doubted. But it reflects the author's opinion .Love makes the world go around. This topic was proved though the novel.

In an anthor plot ,Oliver entered a haunt of thieves by accident.A girl names Nacy rejected Mr Brownlow's help .She had no courage to leave the haunt where people had the same fate ,especially his beloved boy Sikes. In the end ,she was beaten to death .And this plot is the trasition .It hinted that bad people are destined to compensate. For Oliver's kindness ,he finally led a happy life with many kindhearted people's help.

This consequence accords with people's common criterion.Temporarily difficulities is not terrible as long as you reasonably deal with it.And success is on the way. What's more,we should always put love in the bottom of hearts.

《霧都孤兒》英文讀后感10

A Review “Oliver Twist” is a heartrending novel by Charles Dickens, published in 1838. The story follows the life of a young orphan boy named Oliver, who is mistreated in a workhouse before being sent to a life of crime in London. Despite the cruelty he endures, Oliver maintains his innocence and goodness throughout his struggles.

One of the novel's most striking aspects is how effectively it captures the harsh realities of life in Victorian England. Dickens' descriptions of the dirty and impoverished streets of London are hauntingly vivid. The novel also exposes the unsympathetic attitude of society towards those living in poverty or without a family to take care of them.

Although “Oliver Twist” is known for its bleak portrayal of society, it is also a story of hope and perseverance. Oliver's journey towards a better life, despite the obstacles he faces, is inspiring and uplifting. His kindness and compassion towards those he meets serve as a reminder of the importance of empathy and humanity in a cruel world.

In conclusion, “Oliver Twist” is a literary masterpiece that

continues to resonate with readers. Its portrayal of social injustice and the plight of the poor is still relevant today. The novel is a must-read for anyone interested in the darker aspects of society, as well as those seeking inspiration in the face of adversity.

《霧都孤兒》英文讀后感11

How can such a little boy who had already suffered oppressive affliction remain pure in body and mind The reason is the nature of goodness. I think it is the most important information implied in the novel by Dickens-he believed that goodnecould conquer every difficulty. Although I don’t think goodneis omnipotent, yet I do believe that those who are kind-hearted live more happily than those who are evil-minded. For me, the nature of goodneis one of the most necessary character for a person. Goodneis to humans what water is to fish. He who is without goodneis an utterly worthleperson. On the contrary, as the famous saying goes, ‘The fragrance always stays in the hand that gives the rose’, he who is with goodneundoubtedly is a happy and useful person. People receiving his help are grateful to him and he also gets gratified from what he has done, and thus he can do good to both the people he has helped and himself. To my disappointment, nowadays some people seem to doubt the existence of the goodnein humanity. If they cannot get profit from showing their ‘kindness’,they draw back when others are faced with trouble and even hit a man when he is down. They are one of the sorts that I really detest. Francis Bacon said in his essay, ‘Goodness, of all virtues and dignities of the mind, is the greatest, being the character of the Deity, and without it, man is a busy, mischievous, wretched thing, no better than a kind of vermin.

《霧都孤兒》英文讀后感12

One of Dickens most enduringly popular stories is Oliver Twist, an early work published 1837-8. Like many of his later novels, its central theme is the hardship faced by the dispossessed and those of the outside of tolite society. Oliver himself is born in a workhouse and treated cruelly there as was the norm at the time for pauper children, in particular by Bumble, a parish council official or eadle The story follows Oliver as he escapes the workhouse and runs away to London.

Here he receives an education in villainy from the criminal gang of Fagin that includes the brutal thief Bill Sikes, the famous artful Dodger and Nancy, Bill whore. Oliver is rescued by the intervention of a benefactor - Mr Brownlow - but the mysterious Monks gets the gang to kidnap the boy again. Nancy intervenes but is murdered viciously by Sikes after she has showed some redeeming qualities and has discovered Monk sinister intention.

The story closes happily and with justice for Bumble and the cruel Monks who has hidden the truth of Oliver parentage out of malice. Accusations were made that the book glamorised crime (like the ewgate Group of the period) but Dickens wisely disassociated himself from criminal romances. His achievement was in fact in presenting the underworld and problems of poverty to the well-off in a way rarely attempted previously.

《霧都孤兒》英文讀后感13

Learn to love and care

Here I am sitting on a couch alone, thinking about what I have justfinished reading with tears of sadness filling my eyes and fire of indignationfilling my heart, which revived my exhausted soul that has already been coveredby the cruelty and the selfishness of the secular world for a long time。 It istruly what I felt after reading Oliver Twist, written by the prominent Britishauthor Charles Dickens。

The resonance between me and the book makes me feel not only the kindnessand the wickedness of all the characters in the novel, but what this aloofsociety lacks, and what I lack deep inside。 These supreme resources I’m talkingabout right now are somewhat different from minerals, oil that we usuallymention。 They’re abstract like feelings, and some kinds of spiritual stimulationthat all of us desire anxiously from one another —— love and care。

Those charitable figures whom Dickens created in the novel are really whatwe need in life。 They showed love and care to others, just as the gentle rainfrom the sky fell upon the earth, which was carved into my heart deeply。

Mr。 Brownlow is one such person。

The other day he had one of his elaborate watches stolen by two skilledteenage thieves,Artful Dodger and Charley Bates, and thought naturally it wasOliver, who was an orphan and forced to live with a gang of thieves, that haddone it because he was the only one near by after the theft had taken place。Being wrathful,he caught Oliver, and sent him to the police station where theill-tempered,unfair magistrates worked。 Fortunately for him,Oliver was provedinnocent by one onlooker afterwards。 With sympathy,Mr。 Brownlow took theinjured, poor Oliver to his own home。 There Oliver lived freely and gleefullyfor some months as if he were Mr。 Brownlow’s own son。 One day, however,Mr。Brownlow asked Oliver to return some books to the bookseller and to send somemoney for the new books that he had already collected。 The thief Oliver oncestayed with kidnapped him。 After that he disappeared in Mr。 Brownlow’s life。Searching for a while,Mr。 Brownlow had to believe the fact that he had

run away with his money。 But dramatically, they came across each otheragain a few years later。 Without hesitation,Mr。 Brownlow took Oliver home forthe second time not caring if he had done something evil。

Perhaps most of us would feel confused about Mr。 Brownlow’s reaction。 Butas a matter of fact, this is just the lesson we should learn from him。 Jesussaid in the Bible。 “Forgive not seven times, but seventy-times seven。” Why isthat? Because forgiveness is our ability to remove negative thoughts andneutralize them so our energy may be spent on doing what we came here for。 Wecannot move forward in our future if past issues cloud our thinking。 Stop putMr。 Brownlow into the list of your models。 Always give people a second chance nomatter what they might have done。 That’s also a substantial part of loving andcaring others。

Then there are Mrs。 Maylie and Rose,Oliver’s other benefactors。 Maybe thereason they loved and cared Oliver was not because of forgiveness。 In my pointof view,it was trust。 They had faith in Oliver when he was considered to be afilthy burglar who tried to break the front door of Maylie’s at midnight。 Butthis wasn’t how these two ladies saw the whole thing。 They denied Oliver’s crimeimmediately and listened attentively to Oliver’s own description of hismiserable life。 They were deeply touched by Oliver’s strong perseverance andastonishing vitality。 Accordingly, they remedied Oliver’s body and heart andturned him into a different boy。 He began to wear appropriate and clean suitswhich were tailor-made for him and receive education。

《霧都孤兒》英文讀后感14

Oliver Twist is written by Charles Dickens.

Charles Dickens is one of the greatest writers in the England. He was born in a poor family, but later he became famous and rich. The famous novel --A Tale of Two Cities is written by him, too.

This novel shows us the cruelty and crime of London. Oliver Twist, the hero, is a poor orphan. He lived in a life filled with taunts. Nobody loved him. With visions of his future, he decided to go to London. He thought a new life was ing, but he was wrong, a group of thieves were waiting for him.

The author created a group of bad men.

Fagin, an old man, with a horribly ugly face and red hair, was the head of those thieves. He tried to make Oliver be a criminal.

Bill Sikes was a cruel and evil man in the group. He had a bad temper.

Monks, Oliver’s brother, did bad things to hurt Oliver. He wanted to get the legacies left by his father alone. He paid Fagin to trap Oliver into a life of crime. In fact, they were all afraid of being put into prison and being hanged. They can’t live happily.

Nancy, a poor girl, loved a bad man. She had to help Bill Sikes perpetrate, because she loved him. She had to be loyal to the criminal group, because she loved him. Actually, she was kind. She helped Oliver at the risk of her life. If she hadn’t fell in love with Sikes, she would have a happy ending.

The author showed these ugly things to us, he described an ugly world.

But there are more kind people in the novel.

Mr. Brownlow, an old friend of Oliver’s father, took good care of Oliver.

Mrs. Maylie, Harry Maylie’s mother, saved Oliver of his life.

Miss Rose is the aunt of Oliver, in fact.

They all protect Oliver from hurt.

Oliver was unlucky to meet so many evil people, but he was luckier to get help from so many kind people.

In the end of the novel, all the evil people were punished. Oliver got what he should get. Rose married Harry Maylie and they lived happily.

All the kind people have a happy ending.

Righteousness can always beat evil. I think this is what the author wants to tell. Although there are many ugly things in the world, we must believe that righteousness can always beat evil.

We must store kindness even though we are in ugly situation. One is poor if he doesn’t have kindness. One is rich if he has kindness. So please store your kindness in your mind.

What’s more, the novel also tells us to be brave. Oliver was brave enough to overe all the problems he had met. No matter how difficult the problem is, we can’t give up, we must try our best to solve it.

From Oliver Twist , I have learnt a lot .It’s really a good novel.

《霧都孤兒》英文讀后感15

Oliver Twist, one of the most famous works of Charles Dickens’, is a novel reflecting the tragic fact of the life in Britain in 18th century. The author who himself was born in a poor family wrote this novel in his twenties with a view to reveal the ugly masks of those cruel criminals and to expose the horror and violence hidden underneath the narrow and dirty streets in London. The hero of this novel was Oliver Twist, an orphan, who was thrown into a world full of poverty and crime. He suffered enormous pain, such as hunger, thirst, beating and abuse. While reading the tragic experiences of the little Oliver, I was shocked by his sufferings. I felt for the poor boy, but at the same time I detested the evil Fagin and the brutal Bill. To my relief, as was written in all the best stories, the goodness eventually conquered devil and Oliver lived a happy life in the end. One of the plots that attracted me most is that after the theft, little Oliver was allowed to recover in the kind care of Mrs. Maylie and Rose and began a new life. He went for walks with them, or Rose read to him, and he worked hard at his lessons. He felt as if he had left behind forever the world of crime and hardship and poverty. How can such a little boy who had already suffered oppressive affliction remain pure in body and mind The reason is the nature of goodness. I think it is the most important information implied in the novel by Dickens-he believed that goodness could conquer every difficulty. Although I don’t think goodness is omnipotent, yet I do believe that those who are kind-hearted live more happily than those who are evil-minded. For me, the nature of goodness is one of the most necessary character for a person. Goodness is to humans what water is to fish. He who is without goodness is an utterly worthless person. On the contrary, as the famous saying goes, ‘The fragrance always stays in the hand that gives the rose’, he who is with goodness undoubtedly is a happy and useful person. Francis Bacon said in his essay, ‘Goodness, of all virtues and dignities of the mind, is the greatest, being the character of the Deity, and without it, man is a busy, mischievous, wretched thing, no better than a kind of vermin.’

That is to say a person without goodness is destined to lose everything. Therefore, I, a kind person, want to tell those ‘vermin-to-be’ to learn from the kind Oliver and regain the nature of goodness.
