Wuthering Heights

The book Wuthering Heights told us a story about love and revenge: the abandoned boy Heathdiff was adopted by Mr Eamshaw and lived with Mr Earnshaw’s son Hindley and daughter Cathiner.Hindley disliked Heathdiff.He insulted and maltreated Heathdiff in every possible way after Mr Earnshaw’s death.At the same time, peculiar emotion occurred between Cathiners and Heathdiff.Because of vanity and ignorance, Cathiner decided to mary Linton.Heathdiff left with anger.Three years later, Heathdiff returned to revenge.He succeeded in annexing all the property of Hindley’s and the Linton’s.However, Cathiner’s ghost pestered him all the time, and he died in mental disorder.To understand Wuthering Heights, you must know the auther Amily well.She had been abnormal in inentality ever since her childhood.Her sister Charlotte had once said that Amily was even stronger than a man in character, and more simple than a child.He name Heathdiff was compounded by the words Heath and Cliff, itself gave the readers a feeling of unfeelingness, which well annotated Amily’s abnormal mentality.Abnormal mentality did good for inducing and enriching the imagination of the auther in some way.Sometimes, Amily’s imagination was beyond human nature but urueasenable.That was why she could with the thrilling scene in Mr lockwood’s dream, the behainour of Cathiner when she fell ill, and the words full of strong enthusiasm but unimaginable like.They were locked in an embrace from which I thought my mistress would never be released alive.Amily’s abnormal quality decided the thinking way during her creating, but her work was far from abnormal.Withering Heights is a healthy and harmonious work.Love-hetred-Ievenge-the Ievival of huanan natme,that is the clue of the story Cathiner and Heathdiff weIe a coupla of Iebels against the trandition The tragedy happened all because Cathiner didit Iesist thoughout and betraged Heathcliff at the key moment she ruined herself,Heathdiff and nearty the next generation The author portraged Cathiner Ivth a complicated mood she sympathized with her while being angry with her and she feet Sony for her while spurring to her.

The most vivid character in the story was Iepresented by Hindley and he could bear he was tormented by love Catheter’s contempt and Laughing at him that was what he couldn’t bear That the heavy pies sure split his soul explained his cruel and crazyIeuenge.The writing of the novel gave preference to mysterious phenomenon and horrible atmosphere One of the most important fealties was the complexity of the narration structure It broke away from conventions and began from the middle This method of narration was for more attractive.Among all the characters like the housekeeper Allen most She was never afraid of them she always said and did what she wanted to The most important point is that she was kind hearted and justice.A good book is worthy leading for many tines Withering Heights is not easy to understand but once you understand it you wild wander at the talent of the author.Wuthering Heights opens with Lockwood, a tenant of Heathcliff’s, visiting the home of his landlord.A subsequent visit to Wuthering Heights yields an accident and a curious supernatural encounter, which pique Lockwood’s curiosity.Back at Thrushcross Grange and recuperating from his illness, Lockwood begs Nelly Dean, a servant who grew up in Wuthering Heights and now cares for Thrushcross Grange, to tell him of the history of Heathcliff.Nelly narrates the main plot line of Wuthering Heights.Mr.Earnshaw, a Yorkshire Farmer and owner of Wuthering Heights, brings home an orphan from Liverpool.The boy is named Heathcliff and is raised with the Earnshaw children, Hindley and Catherine.Catherine loves Heathcliff but Hindley hates him because Heathcliff has replaced Hindley in Mr.Earnshaw’s affection.After Mr.Earnshaw’s death, Hindley does what he can to destroy Heathcliff, but Catherine and Heathcliff grow up playing wildly on the moors, oblivious of anything or anyone else—until they encounter the Lintons.Edgar and Isabella Linton live at Thrushcross Grange and are the complete opposites of Heathcliff and Catherine.The Lintons welcome Catherine into their home but shun Heathcliff.Treated as an outsider once again, Heathcliff begins to think about revenge.Catherine, at first, splits her time between Heathcliff and Edgar, but soon she spends more time with Edgar, which makes Heathcliff jealous.When Heathcliff overhears Catherine tell Nelly that she can never marry him(Heathcliff), he leaves Wuthering Heights and is gone for three years.While he is gone, Catherine continues to court and ends up marrying Edgar.Their happiness is short-lived because they are from two different worlds, and their relationship is strained further when Heathcliff returns.Relationships are complicated even more as Heathcliff winds up living with his enemy, Hindley(and Hindley’s son, Hareton), at Wuthering Heights and marries Isabella, Edgar’s sister.Soon after Heathcliff’s marriage, Catherine gives birth to Edgar’s daughter, Cathy, and dies.Heathcliff vows revenge and does not care who he hurts while executing it.He desires to gain control of Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange and to destroy everything Edgar Linton holds dear.In order to exact his revenge, Heathcliff must wait 17 years.Finally, he forces Cathy to marry his son, Linton.By this time he has control of the Heights and with Edgar’s death, he has control of the Grange.Through all of this, though, the ghost of Catherine haunts Heathcliff.What he truly desires more than anything else is to be reunited with his soul mate.At the end of the novel, Heathcliff and Catherine are united in death, and Hareton and Cathy are going to be united in marriage.Wuthering Heights is Emily Bront?'s only novel.It was first published in 1847 under the pseudonym Ellis Bell, and a posthumous second edition was edited by her sister Charlotte.The name of the novel comes from the Yorkshire manor on the moors on which the story centres.(As

an adjective, wuthering is a Yorkshire word referring to turbulent weather.)The narrative tells the tale of the all-encompassing and passionate, yet thwarted love between Heathcliff and Catherine Earnshaw, and how this unresolved passion eventually destroys both themselves and many around them.Now considered a classic of English literature, Wuthering Heights's innovative structure, which has been likened to a series of Matryoshka dolls, met with mixed reviews by critics when it first appeared.Though Charlotte Bront?'s Jane Eyre was originally considered the best of the Bront? sisters' works, many subsequent critics of Wuthering Heights argued that its originality and achievement made it superior.Wuthering Heights has also given rise to many adaptations and inspired works, including films, radio, television dramatisations, musicals and songs(notably the hit Wuthering Heights by Kate Bush)and opera.

—— Hatred paralyzes life;love releases it.Hatred confuses life;love harmonizes it.Hatred darkens life;love illuminates it.——Martin Luther King, Jr.After enjoying the book ,what I learned can be concentrated on Martin Luther’s sentences above,the hatred and the love.The novel ends with the scene “Mr.Lockwood discovered the three headstones on the the slope nextthe moor:the middle one gray,and half buried in heath:Edgar Linton’s only harmonized by the turf and moss creeping up its foot:Heathcliff’s still bare.I lingered round them, under that benign sky;watched the moths fluttering among the heath and harebells,listened to the soft wind breathing through the grass,and wondered how anyone could ever imagine unquiet slumbers for the sleepers in that quite earth.” It really impresses me.I think this is the right interpretation of the most beautiful love and hatred.As the saying goes, “Hatred often springs from love.” Heathcliff’s hatred springs from the love for Catherine.It grows when Catherine’s decision to marry Edgar so that she will be “the greatest woman of the neighbourhood ”.But after finishing reading the whole book, I can feel that they are indeed in deep love.They may have a happy ending if Catherine

didn’t scruple her vanity and ignorance.In the ninth chapter of the novel, there is such a passage of her inner monologue, “My love for Linton is like the foliage in the woods;time will change its, I’m well aware,as winter changes the trees.My visible delighted, but necessary Nelly,I am Heathchliff!He’s always, always in my mind;not as a pleasure,any more than I am always a pleasure to myself,but as my own being.Whatever our souls are made of,his and mine are the same;and Linton’s is as different as a moonbeam from lightning,or frost from fire.” Once Heathcliff also said to Mrs.Dean that two words would comprehended his future—death and hell:existence,after losing Cathy,would be hell.Not only because of the failure of love but also his life experience,living environment and his class standing lead to his hatred.As a child,he gravely said: “I’m tring to settle how I shall pay Hindley back.I don’t care how long I wait,if I can only do it at last.And god won’t have the satisfaction that I shall.” L ater, He neither wept nor prayed: he cursed and defied:execrated God and man, and gave himself up to reckless dissipation.The emotion of his except the love for Cathy was nothing,for he’s only half a man-not so much.During his life, his bad behaviour to Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange already altered the colour of his mind.Although he completed his revenge plan, when seeing Catherine and Hareton’s love,time of his dying, he said to himself “It is a poor conclusion,is

it not ?An absurd termination to my violent exertions ? I get levers and mattocks to demolish the two houses,and,train myself to be capable of working like Hercules.But I have lost the faculty of enjoying their destruction,and I am too idle to destroy for nothing.”

In the end, Mr.Heathcliff died of his true love and his all-life hatred.It’sa tragedy of two houses.From the tragedy I realized that the greatest source of misery and hatred in this world is clinging to past hurts and love.We sometimes shouldn’t hark back to some events long gone.Learn to be more tolerance,wise and kind.Just remember as Martin Luther said above.

wuthering heights was not well received by the reading public, many of whom condemned it as sordid, vulgar, and unnatural--and author emily bronte went to her grave in 1848 believing that her only novel was a failure.it was not until 1850, when wuthering heights received a second printing with an introduction by emily's sister charlotte, that it attracted a wide readership.and from that point the reputation of the book has never looked back.today it is widely recognized as one of the great novels of english literature.even so, wuthering heights continues to divide readers.it is not a pretty love story;rather, it is swirling tale of largely unlikeable people caught up in obsessive love that turns to dark madness.it is cruel, violent, dark and brooding, and many people find it extremely unpleasant.and yet--it possesses a grandeur of language and design, a sense of tremendous pity and great loss that sets it apart from virtually every other novel written.the novel is told in the form of an extended flashback.after a visit to his strange landlord, a newcomer to the area desires to know the history of the family--which he receives from nelly deans, a servant who introduces us to the earnshaw family who once resided in the house known as wuthering heights.it was once a cheerful place, but old earnshaw adopted a gipsy child who he named heathcliff.and catherine,daughter of the house, found in him the perfect companion:wild, rude, and as proud and cruel as she.but although catherine loves him, even recognizes him as her soulmate, she cannot lower herself to marry so far below her social station.she instead marries another, and in so doing sets in motion an obsession that will destroy them all.wuthering heights is a bit difficult to get into;the opening chapters are so dark in their portrait of the end result of this obsessive love that they are somewhat off-putting.but they feed into the flow of the work in a remarkable way, setting the stage for one of the most remarkable structures in all of literature, a story that circles upon itself in a series of repetitions as it plays out across two generations.catherine and heathcliff are equally remarkable, both vicious and cruel, and yet never able to shed their impossible love no matter how brutally one may wound the other.as the novel coils further into alcoholism, seduction,and one of the most elaborately imagined plans of revenge it gathers into a ghostly tone: heathcliff,driven to madness by a woman who is not there but who seems reflected in every part of his world--dragging her corpse from the grave, hearing her calling to him from the moors, escalating his brutality not for the sake of brutality but so that her memory will never fade, so that she may never leave his mind until death itself.yes, this is madness, insanity,and there is no peace this side of the grave or even beyond。
