Touchy Topics
In North America when people meet each other for the first time, they talk about things like family, work, school or sports. They ask questions like “Do you have any brothers or sisters?”, “Where do you work?”, “What school do you go to?”,and “Do you like sports?” They also ask questions like “Where do you come from?” and “Where do you live?” These are polite questions. They are not personal private. But some things are personal or private, and questions about them are not polite.People don’t ask questions about a person’s salary. They don’t ask how much someone paid for something. It is also not polite to ask older people their age. It’s also not polite to ask people questions about politics or religion unless you know them very well.People don’t ask unmarried people “Why are you single?”, and they don’t ask a married couple with no children “Why don’t you have any children?”

Wedding Congratulations
John and Mary, You have my warmest congratulations on this wonderful day.I am really very happy for you two.I have known John for about five years, and I have always been envious of his talent and abilities in many respects. He is not merely a competent professional in international trade;he is exceptional in doing almost anything.Today, I have become even more envious of John, because he just got married to one of the most beautiful brides in the world. But don't let our envy bother you, John, because we want you to become the happiest couple in the world, and keep us envious of you two forever!Congratulations, and be happy! We all wish you the very best!【參考譯文】
Gratefulness 感激
In our hectic, fast-paced lives, it’s easy to forget about the many things for which we have to be grateful. We tend to be goal-seeking, achievement-oriented people. And there’s nothing wrong with that. However, it’s vitally important that we not lose sight of the things that are near and dear, things we all too easily take for granted. What we focus on expands. If we focus on the problems in our lives, they tend to increase. If we focus on the good things we already have, they too, have a tendency to grow.Focusing on what we have and what we want “appreciates” these things---they grow.If you learn to appreciate more of what you already have, you’ll find yourself having more to appreciate.【參考譯文】

Learning to Speak English is Physical Work
Since English is not your native tongue, it’s difficult to pronounce certain sounds. That’s why you must develop the muscles of your speech organs to produce unfamiliar sounds. So when you read, it’s important to read as loudly as possible, as learning any foreign language.Remember, you learn to swim by swimming. You learn to dance by dancing. You learn to drive by driving. You learn to play the piano by playing. So you can only learn to speak English by speaking.【參考譯文】
Try More Than Once
Take a look at an apple tree. There might be five hundred apples on the tree, but each apple has just ten seeds. That’s a lot of seeds!
We might ask, “Why would you need so many seeds just to grow a few more apple trees?”
Nature has something to teach us here. It’s telling us:“Not all seeds grow.In life, most seeds never grow.So if you really want to make something happen, you had better try more than once.”
This might mean:
You’ll attend twenty interviews to get one job. You’ll interview forty people to find one good employee. You’ll talk to fifty people to sell one house, one car, one vacuum cleaner, one insurance policy, or a business idea. And you might meet a hundred acquaintances just to find one special friend. When we understand the “Law of the Seed”, we don’t get so disappointed. We stop feeling like victims. We learn how to deal with things that happen to us.【參考譯文】
Survival Game in the Wild
Given the slightest chance, life can bounce back.Nature has amazing powers of renewal which emerge from the very process of evolution.Today’s fabulous diversity is the result of a four-billion-year war for survival.Life’s greatest triumphs may be yet to come.【參考譯文】
Concession Speech: I Endorse Obama(節選)
--Hillary Clinton
I want to start today by saying how grateful I am to all of you, to everyone who poured your hearts and your hopes into this campaign, who drove for miles and lined the streets waving homemade signs, who scrimped and saved to raise money, who knocked on doors and made calls, who talked, sometimes argued with your friends and neighbors who e-mailed and contributed online, who invested so much in our common enterprise, to the moms and dads who came to our events, who lifted their little girls and little boys on their shoulders and whispered in their ears, “See, you can be anything you want to be.”
To the young people like 13-year-old Anne Riddell from Mayfield, Ohio, who had been saving for two years to go to Disney World and decided to use her savings instead to travel to Pennsylvania with her mom and volunteer there, as well.To the veterans, to the childhood friends, to New Yorkers and Arkansans who traveled across the country, telling anyone who would listen why you supported me.【參考譯文】
Love in life
Life is a gift we’re given each and every day.Dream about tomorrow, but live for today. To live a little, you’ve got to love a whole lot.Love turns the ordinary into the extraordinary.【
Concession Speech: I Endorse Obama
—Hillary Clinton
So I want to say to my supporters: When you hear people saying or think to yourself, “If only” or “What if ”, I say, please, don’t go there.Every moment wasted looking back keeps us from moving forward.Life is too short;time is too precious, and the stakes are too high to dwell on what might have been.We have to work together for what still can be.And that is why I will work my heart out to make sure that Senator Obama is our next President. And I hope and pray that all of you will join me in that effort.【參考譯文】

Oprah Winfrey Harvard Commencement Speech
I know that...I know that you all might have a little anxiety now and hesitation about leaving the comfort of college and putting those Harvard credentials to the test. But no matter what challenges or setbacks or disappointments you may encounter along the way, you will find true success and happiness if you have only one goal, there really is only one, and that is this: to fulfill the highest most truthful expression of yourself as a human being. You wanna max out your humanity by using your energy to lift yourself up, your family and the people around you.Theologian Howard Thurman said it best.He said, “Don’t ask yourself what the world needs.Ask yourself what makes you come alive and then go do that, because what the world needs is people who have come alive.”
From time to time you may stumble, fall, you will for sure count on this, no doubt you will have questions and you will have doubts about your path, but I know this, if you’re willing to listen to be guided by that still small voice that is the G.P.S.within yourself, to find out what makes you come alive, you will be more than okay. You will be happy, you will be successful, and you will make a difference in the world.Congratulations, Class of 2013, congratulations to your family and friends, good luck, and thank you for listening. Was that okay?
In October 2003, the first Chinese citizen saw his homeland from outer space, and the mythology and dreams of thousands of years, became a reality. Our songs of how the earth is our garden and our pride in surviving our long history suddenly became more vivid and clear.2003 年10 月,中國人第一次從外太空親眼看到了自己的國家,那數千年的神話和暢想,變成了事實。
Who are the Chinese? What makes us who we are? But even before this momentous chapter in our history, Chinese people have always regarded themselves from multi-facets angles. Is tradition a burden, or kind of driving force for development? Do we take our culture heritage too seriously, or not seriously enough? Do you see conflict or fusion, nostalgia or visions of the future? ??
In my mind, China is a very inclusive country??
She is a country with rich culture??
She has a long and eventful history that is new each day.
But after 30 years, the world has seen how much China’s profound history and culture essence has given, lead us the flexibility and unity when facing fast transformation. ......Chinese people future happiness must be built on the foundation of the past.Chinese people have never cherished their cultural heritage more than today, nor felt more its lingering charm which is why after so many generations, we are still here.
From tradition to revelation, inspired by the future, Chinese people are creating an even newer way of thinking: building this generation’s new common spirit.
China on the way…
Abundance is a Life Style
Abundance is a life style, a way of living your life.Abundance is a philosophy,it appears in your physiology, your value system, and carries its own set of beliefs. You walk with it, sleep with it, bath with it, feel with it, and need to maintain and take care of it as well.Abundance is seeing people for their gifts and not what they lack or could be.Seeing all things for their gifts and not what they lack.Be in a state of abundance of what you already have.I guarantee they are there;it always is buried but there.Breathe them in as if they are the air you breathe because they are yours.Let go of anything that isn’t abundant for the time being.Name the shoe boxes in your closet with your gifts of abundance, pull from them every morning if needed.Know they are there.Learning to trust in your own abundance is required. When you begin to be within your own space of abundance, whatever you need will appear whenever you need it.That’s just the way the higher powers set this universe up to work.Trust the universal energy. The knowing of it all will humble you to its power yet let the brightness of you shine everywhere it needs to.Just by being from a state of abundance, it is being you.【參考譯文】
Michael Jackson
I love you too...However, today, when I create my music, I feel like an instrument of nature, I wonder what delight nature must feel when we open our hearts and express our God-given talents, the sound of approval rolls across the universe and the whole world abounds in magic, wonder fills our heart, for we have glimpsed, for an instant the playfulness of life. And that’s why I love children and learn so much from being around them.I realize that many of our world’s problems today, from the inner-city crime to the large-scale war and terrorism and our overcrowded prisons are a result of the fact that children have had their childhood stolen from them. The magic, the wonder the mystery and the innocence of a child’s heart...are the seeds of creativity that will heal the world.I really believe that. What we need to learn from children isn’t childish.Being with them connects us to the deeper wisdom of life which is ever-present and only asks to be lived. They know the way to solutions that lie waiting to be recognized within our own hearts.Today I would like to thank all the children of the world including, including the sick and deprived, I’m so sensitive to your pain, I also, I also want to thank all those who has helped me, to channel my talent here on Earth, from the beginning, my parents, all my brothers and sisters, especially Janet.【參考譯文】
The Torch has been passed to a New Generation of America By John Kennedy And so, my fellow Americans: ask not what your country can do for you—ask what you can do for your country. My fellow citizens of the world: ask not what America will do for you, but what together we can do for the freedom of man. Finally, whether you are citizens of America or citizens of the world, ask of us here the same high standards of strength and sacrifice which we ask of you. With a good conscience our only sure reward, with history the final judge of our deeds, let us go forth to lead the land we love, asking His blessing and His help, but knowing that here on earth God’s work must truly be our own.【參考譯文】

Explore Nanjing, host of 2014
Youth Olympics
The 2014 Summer Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing are only a few days away.As the world tunes in to the international event, the host city has a chance to highlight its unique charm and fascinating history.Nanjing, capital of East China's Jiangsu province, does not see the flow of international travelers that Beijing and Shanghai do.With a blend of the modern and traditional, Nanjing has a proud history of being “the ancient capital of six dynasties”.Royal summer retreats of Chinese emperorsTaking a summer escape away from hot and stuffy air is not a modern idea.At a time when air conditioning and the refrigerator were not even a summer dream, traveling to a place for milder weather and cooler water seemed more important to people, including for the emperors.Like clockwork, many emperors would stay at a summer resort with their concubines and ministers during the hottest months each year. Here we take a look at some of the summer resorts lived by the royal families, which now can be enjoyed by ordinary people.Boeing 787 to serve Xiamen Air A Boeing 787, the first of its kind for Xiamen Air, will land at Xiamen Airport in Fujian province on Aug 31 after completing its first test flight on Aug 12 in Seattle, US.The Boeing 787 Dreamliner is the first mid-sized long-range airliner in aircraft history. As Xiamen Air’s first wide-bodied aircraft, the Boeing 787 can fly 14,232 kilometers and enable Xiamen Air to open more non-stop air routes.Xiamen Air has ordered six Boeing 787 planes. The second one will be delivered in October and the other four are scheduled for delivery next year.Xiamen Air is the third airline company in China to introduce the Boeing 787, following China Southern and Hainan airlines.Xiamen Air currently has 106 planes. The new Boeing 787 will initially be used for domestic flights and later serve international routes, as the airline hopes to expand its international service. The new plane will first fly between Fuzhou and Beijing in September, and then fly to North America and Europe after approval.
Theology 2 D 11.17 Yuxuan Li Theology Newsletter for Thanksgiving/Advent
I’d like to spend the next few days focusing on Thanksgiving. That’s right, Thanksgiving.Yes, I know that the official American holiday falls on the fourth Thursday in November, not the third Monday. So, yes, I know that I’m a week early. But I’d like to begin to offer some thoughts on Thanksgiving, even though we won’t be sitting down to a Turkey dinner for another 240 hours or so.Why start a conversation about Thanksgiving now? I do not mean in any way to undermine the specialness of the traditional holiday.I think it’s great that the United States continues to set apart a day a year for giving thanks. And I think it’s doubly great that most of us still believe that Thanksgiving is a day for actually giving thanks to God, not just a time for feeling nebulously thankful while filling our faces with a Turkey dinner and watching football on TV.My hope is that by writing about Thanksgiving a week and a half early, I might actually enhance your celebration of Thanksgiving, not detract from it.Thus, today’s post will be the first of several on giving thanks. There is a danger, I believe, in identifying one day a year as Thanksgiving Day.It’s the danger of implying that thanks is due on this day, but not on others. We face a similar danger, for example, when we designate the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day.Shouldn’t children honor their mothers more than once a year? Similarly, shouldn’t we be thankful more often than once a year on the fourth Thursday of November? As a Christian, I would argue that giving thanks to God is important because it honors God.I would also argue that Scripture calls for consistent gratitude among God’s people. But, there is also case for gratitude that doesn’t depend on biblical theology. In fact, it appeals to common sense and even self interest. To put the matter bluntly: Gratitude will improve your life.Gratitude magnifies our experience of the good things in life, enabling us to enjoy them more thoroughly.Gratitude also helps us to endure the hard things in life with dignity, perhaps even with humor.Gratitude is like savoring a fine meal, enjoy every bite, rather than racing through a meal as if it’s some sort of race.Let me offer a person example of what I’m talking about here.I was able to go to college because I received generous financial aid.My father had been unemployed for several years so our family resources were limited.Harvard expected me to earn a fair amount of money through working, both during the summers and the school years.I was also required to take out a reasonable loan. But the majority of my tuition, room, and board was covered by a grant from the school. This was not a merit-based scholarship, I might add.I’m not bragging here.Harvard’s assistance was based on financial need, of which I had plenty.

However, little information..little attention...little work...little data
little research
or few studies
few investigations...few researchers...few attempts...or no
none of these studies
has(have)been less
done on...focused on
attempted to
conducted
investigated
studied
(with respect to)
Previous research(studies, records)has(have)
failed to consider
ignored
misinterpreted
neglected to
overestimated, underestimated
misleaded
thus, these previus results are inconclisive, misleading, unsatisfactory, questionable, controversial..Uncertainties(discrepancies)still exist...
However, data is still scarce
rare
less accurate
there is still dearth of
We need to
aim to
have to
provide more documents
data
records
studies
increase the dataset
Further studies are still necessary...essential...
We aim to test the feasibility(reliability)of the...It is hoped that the qutestion will be resolved(fall away)with our proposed
method(approach).b)提出自己的觀點
We aim to
This paper reports on
provides results
extends the method..focus on
The purpose of this paper is to
Furthermore, Moreover, In addition, we will also discuss...c)
We preliminarily focus on the older(younger)...
或者說,further studies on...will be summarized in our next
study(or elsewhere)

We believe that...3)在更通常的情況下,由數據推斷出一定的結論,用,Results indicate, infer, suggest, imply that...4)在及其特別的情況才可以用We put forward
(discover, observe..)..“for the first time”.
We tentatively put forward(interrprete this to..)
Or The results may be due to(caused by)attributed to
rsulted from..Or This is probably a consequence of
It seems that..can account for(interpret)this..Or It is pisible that it stem from...

However, also, in addition, consequently, afterwards, moreover, Furthermore, further, although, unlike, in contrast, Similarly,Unfortunately, alternatively, parallel results,In order to, despite, For example, Compared with
other results, thus, therefore...
AA advocated it for the first time. Then BB further demonstrated that.. More recent studies by DD..
AA pput forward that...In contrast, BB believe
or Unlike AA, BB suggest
or On the contrary(表明前面的觀點錯誤,如果只是表明
AA suggest
Similarily, alternatively, BB..Or Also, BB
or BB allso does..
Consequently, therefore, as a result,表明遞進關系,可用furthermore, further, moreover, in addition,當寫完一段英文,最好首先檢查一下是否較好地應用
...Therefore, there are three aspects of this problen have to
be addressed. The first questuon involves...The second problem relates to
The thrid aspect deals with...
Or, 可以直接用First, Second, Third...Finally,..

Their results
are wrong, very questionable, have no commensence, etc.
Their studies may be more reasonable if they had
considered this situation.Their results could be better convinced if they...Or Their conclusion may remain some uncertanties.
It should be noted that this study has examined only..We concentrate(focus)on only...We have to point out that we do not..Some limitations of this study are...2.
The results do not imply,The results can not be used to determine
be taken as evidence of
Unfortunately, we can not determien this from this data
Our results are lack of...
Notwithstading its limitation, this tudy does suggest..However, these problems culd be solved if we consdier
Despite its preliminary character, this study
can clearly indicate..
