泛指不用工作的休假時間用time off work或者time away from work，準假叫be granted。

Holiday和vacation在英語中意思接近，它們包括三種情況：一是為了休息(rest)或者娛樂(recreation)而離開當前所做的經(jīng)常性的工作(leave of absence);二是為了娛樂或者旅游(tourism)的一次具體行程(trip或者journey);三是進行文化、宗教、國家或者其它情況下(observance)的慶?；顒?celebration或者festivity)，可以是法定的(official)也可以不是法定的(unofficial)，比如中國的春節(jié)和西方的圣誕節(jié)。

Holiday是holy和day的合寫，最初的意思是特殊的宗教節(jié)日。后來日常語言用來指特別的休息日，以區(qū)別于周末的正常休息。Vacation的本意是‘空缺’的意思。在英國原指法院或者大學(xué)的休假。

作為一種旅行，在北美，它指離開工作場所或者學(xué)校比較長的一段時間，但也可以指比較短暫的離家數(shù)日。其它英語國家在這樣的情況下通常用holiday表達。在這些情況下，英聯(lián)邦國家有時候也用annual leave這個詞。

作為一種傳統(tǒng)，所有英語國家都可用holiday指國家或者文化傳統(tǒng)設(shè)置的用來慶祝的節(jié)日。Holiday也指不上學(xué)或者不上班的特殊日子，比如勞動節(jié)。注意，如果把holiday放在一個具體節(jié)日后面，如Labor Day Holiday，它指的是正式節(jié)日日期附近的休息日。常見的病假一般叫sick leave，也叫sickness pay或者sick pay。它指員工的一種福利(benefit)，在生病情況下可以享受帶薪休假(paid leave)。各個國家、地區(qū)及行業(yè)規(guī)定不盡一致，可能需要medical certificate來獲得必要的休息時間。在不上班(absence)的第一天，需要請病假的人需要向直接領(lǐng)導(dǎo)(line manager)電話請假。銷假(return to work或者back to work)時，可能需要填寫病休表(sickness absence form)。

Bereavement leave或者叫compassionate leave通常是在員工近親屬去世的時候請的假。這里說的近親屬包括父母(parents)、岳父母(father/mother-in-law)、兄弟姐妹(brother/sister)、配偶或者伴侶(husband/wife/partner)、子女(children)(可能包括意外流產(chǎn)(miscarriage)、死胎(stillbirth)及新生兒死亡(neonatal death))及祖父母(grandparent)。

Parental leave指為了照顧小孩的假期，可能帶薪(paid)也可能不帶薪(unpaid)，屬于職工福利之一。它比漢語的產(chǎn)假(maternity leave)范圍廣，包括父親在這種情況下的休假(paternity leave)和收養(yǎng)孩子的休假(adoption leave)。

Staycation是Stay-at-home和vacation的混合體，指在家或者家的附近進行休息或者休閑活動。這種方式比較經(jīng)濟實惠，不需要支付住宿費用(lodging costs)和旅行費用(travel expenses)。這樣的度假者叫staycationer，這樣的方式叫staycationing。Red letter(red-letter)day或者scarlet day指任何具有特殊意義的日期，不一定是我們通常說的節(jié)假日。

Sabbatical leave比較特殊，通常是為了完成某個特殊目的或者長期研究而請的長假，可能達到一年的時間。主要是科學(xué)家、醫(yī)生、音樂家、教授、牧師、體育工作者以及學(xué)者的一種待遇。大概是每隔六年一次。一般不帶薪。但有時候可以半年全薪，或者全年半薪。還有一種特殊的假期叫g(shù)ap year，或者year out、year off、deferred year、bridging year、time out、time off等。它指在人生兩個重要階段之間的一段比較長的休息，通常為一年。例如進入大學(xué)前，大學(xué)和研究生階段之間，換工作前，結(jié)婚前，生孩子前，退休前等。Career break指沒有工作的一段時間。傳統(tǒng)上是女性生孩子和照顧孩子時采取的一種方式，如今也指為了個人發(fā)展或者事業(yè)發(fā)展而暫時離開工作。時間一般在兩個月至兩年。它和失業(yè)不同，一般這段時間被用來旅行、做義工、海外工作或者學(xué)習(xí)培訓(xùn)。

Leave of absence(LOA)指員工離開工作一段時間，但是保留員工身份。如果帶薪，則通常是雇主提出的。比如工傷、參加陪審團、雇主維修等。員工提出的這種休假通常不帶薪，比如預(yù)備役人員被征召、照顧家人等。有時候這是雇主在不景氣情況下避免解雇員工(layoff)的一種手段，也叫l(wèi)eave of absence in lieu of layoff。

Bank holiday是英國和愛爾蘭的一種公共假日(public holiday)。非基礎(chǔ)行業(yè)(水電、消防、急救、警察、醫(yī)護人員)的人可以休假，而其他基礎(chǔ)行業(yè)工作的人可以獲得額外補償。名稱來源于一個現(xiàn)象：當初銀行在這樣的日期關(guān)門，其它生意無法進行。

在美國，政府認可的節(jié)假日叫federal holidays。有趣的是，美國總統(tǒng)有權(quán)宣布某一天為節(jié)日，但是政府和企業(yè)并不被要求休息，很多人根本注意不到這樣的節(jié)日。這樣的節(jié)日可以叫作 national holiday，但不是federal holiday。另外，有些美國學(xué)校把Christmas稱為winter holiday或者winter break，以避免暗示所有學(xué)生都信仰基督教。此外，還有一些節(jié)日的名稱有爭議，如哥倫布日(Columbus Day)在某些地區(qū)被稱為美國土著日(Indigenous Poeples of the Americas Day)，馬丁路德金日(Martin Luther King Day)被某些人稱為民權(quán)日(Civil Rights Day)。美聯(lián)英語：www.tmdps.cn
