每年的12月25日，是基督教徒紀念耶穌誕生的日子，稱為圣誕節。從12月24日于翌年1月6日為圣誕節節期。節日期間，各國基督教徒都舉行隆重的紀念儀式。圣誕節本來是基督教徒的節日，由于人們格外重視，它便成為一個全民性的節日，國家一年中最盛大的節日，可以和新年相提并論，類 是西方似我國過春節。西方人以紅、綠、白三色為圣誕色，圣誕節來臨時家家戶戶都要用圣誕色來裝飾。紅色的有圣誕花和圣誕蠟燭。綠色的是圣誕樹。它是圣誕節的主要裝飾品，用砍伐來的杉、柏一類呈塔形的常青樹裝飾而成。上面懸掛著五顏六色的彩燈、禮物和紙花，還點燃著圣誕蠟燭。紅色與白色相映成趣的是圣誕老人，他是圣誕節活動中最受歡迎的人物。西方兒童在圣誕夜臨睡之前，要在壁爐前或枕頭旁放上一只襪子，等候圣誕老人在他們入睡后把禮物放在襪子內。在西方，扮演圣誕老人也是一種習俗。

“圣誕節”這個名稱是“基督彌撒”的縮字。彌撒是教會的一種禮拜儀式。耶誕節是一個宗教節。我們把它當作耶蘇的誕辰來慶祝，因而又名耶誕節。這一天，全世界所有的基督教會都舉行特別的禮拜儀式。但是有很多圣誕節的歡慶活動和宗教并無半點關聯。交換禮物，寄圣誕卡，這都使圣誕節成為一個普天同慶的日子。耶穌的出生是有一段故事的，耶穌是因著圣靈成孕，由童女馬利亞所生的。神更派遣使者加伯列在夢中曉諭約瑟，叫他不要因為馬利亞未婚懷孕而不要她，反而要與她成親，把那孩子起名為“耶穌”，意思是要他把百姓從罪惡中救出來。當馬利亞快要臨盤的時候，羅馬政府下了命令，全部人民到伯利恒務必申報戶籍。約瑟和馬利亞只好遵命。他們到達伯利恒時，天色已昏，無奈兩人未能找到旅館渡宿，只有一個馬棚可以暫住。就在這時，耶穌要出生了！於是馬利亞唯有在馬槽上，生下耶穌。后人為紀念耶穌的誕生，便定十二月二十五為圣誕節，年年望彌撒，紀念耶穌的出世。

圣誕節便是於十二月二十五日紀念耶穌的誕生，但真實的誕生日就沒有人知道了。十九世紀，圣誕卡的流行、圣誕老人的出現，圣誕節亦開始流行起來。

圣誕樹 Christmas Tree

圣誕樹Christmas Tree據稱，圣誕樹最早出現在古羅馬12月中旬的農神節，德國傳教士尼古斯在公元8世紀用縱樹供奉圣嬰。隨后，德國人把12月24日作為亞當和夏娃的節日，在家放上象征伊甸園的“樂園樹”，上掛代表圣餅的小甜餅，象征贖罪;還點上蠟燭，象征基督。到16世紀，宗教改革者馬丁.路德，為求得一個滿天星斗的圣誕之夜，設計出在家中布置一顆裝著蠟燭的圣誕樹。

圣誕卡Christmas Card世界上第一張圣誕卡是1843年英國人亨利.高樂爵士提議，由約翰.卡爾葛荷斯利設計的。卡片上畫的是一個貴族家庭，三代人一齊舉杯對一位不在場的親友表示祝賀。當時他印了1000張，沒有用完的印刷廠就以每張1先令的價錢賣出。圣誕卡就這樣誕生了。

原指公元4世紀時小亞細亞專區的主教尼古拉，他因和藹可親慷慨濟貧萬里聞名。到了6世紀，東方把他尊稱為圣尼古拉。由于民間有關尼古拉的傳說中，都聯系到少年兒童和禮物，從此，圣誕老人便成為專門在圣誕節向孩子們送禮物的慈祥老人的形象。到了18世紀，通過文學和繪畫，圣誕老人逐漸成為身穿紅外衣的白胡子、白眉毛老人形象。

據《圣經》記載，來自東方的圣人在耶穌降生的時候贈送禮物，這就是圣誕老人為兒童贈送禮品習俗的由來。英國孩子在圣誕前夕把長統襪子放在壁爐旁，相信圣誕老人在夜里會從大煙囪下來，給他們帶來滿襪子的禮物。法國的孩子把鞋放在門口，讓圣嬰來時把禮物放在鞋里面。

正像國人過春節吃年夜飯一樣，歐美人過圣誕節也很注重全家團聚，圍坐在圣誕樹下，共進節日美餐。圣誕大餐吃火雞的習俗始于1620年，火雞烤制工藝復雜，味道鮮美持久，以致麥兜小朋友垂涎三尺。這種風俗盛于美國。英國人的圣誕大餐是烤鵝，而非火雞。奧大利人愛在平安夜里，全家老小約上親友成群結隊地到餐館去吃一頓圣誕大餐，其中，火雞、臘雞、燒牛仔肉和豬腿必不可少，同時伴以名酒，吃得大家歡天喜地。
