The happiest people in the world may live in Scandinavia, a new study suggests.
That's according to the United Nations General Assembly's second World Happiness Report, which ranks countries based on several measures of well-being and analyzes the factors that contribute to that well-being.
Denmark was the happiest country, followed by Norway, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Sweden and Canada.
Happiness counts
For years, the tiny Himalayan country of Bhutan has tried to measure “gross national happiness” to counter measures such as gross domestic product(GDP), arguing that such simple metrics don't capture what is really meaningful to people.
Last year's study showed that whereas rich people are happier on average than poor people, increasing GDP in a country doesn't necessarily boost well-being.For instance, GDP tripled in the United States since the 1960s, yet well-being has stagnated.
To assess world happiness in the new study, the researchers analyzed happiness data starting from 2005.Most of the data came from the Gallup World Poll, which surveyed more than 150 countries around the world.
Worldwide trends
Scandinavian countries topped the list of happiest countries, with the United States ranking 17th,bested by Mexico, Panama and the United Arab Emirates.
On average, people in more than 150 countries rate their happiness as a 5.1 on a scale of 0 to 10.But happiness hasn't stayed constant over time: 61 countries saw their happiness improve over the years, while 41 countries have become unhappier.Sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America are becoming happier overall, while industrial nations report less well-being.150多個國家的國民的平均幸福感分數是5.1,滿分是10分。
More than three-quarters of the differences in happiness scores were attributable to six key metrics: real GDP per capita, healthy life expectancy, someone to count on, perceived freedom to make life choices, freedom from corruption and generosity.
The new data could help public policy-makers tweak their policies to impact those factors, such as cracking down on corruption, to boost people's happiness.
In adddition, mental health problems such as clinical depression and anxiety have a huge impact on people's well-being.Yet mental health issues are often ignored b policy-makers, the study found.
“There is now a rising worldwide demand that policy be more closely aligned with what really matters to people as they themselves characterize their well-being,” said study co-author Jeffery Sachs, director of the Earth Institute at Columbia University, in a statement.“More and more world leaders are talking about the importance of well-being as a guide for their nations and the world. The World Happiness Report 2013 offers rich evidence that the systematic measurement and analysis of happiness can teach us a lot about ways to improve the world's well-being and sustainable development.”“現在世界范圍內有一種日漸增長的需求,就是政策要和那些對人民真正重要的事情緊密相關,因為人民自己就是幸福感最好的體現,”這篇調查報告的合作作者、來自哥倫比亞大學地球研究所的Jeffery Sachs 在一份聲明中說。
Happy citizens also make for better countries: The report found that happiness makes fore people who live longer, more productive lives, have higher earnings and are better citizens.

In Life We Are Happiest When…
A man and his girlfriend were married. It was a large celebration.
All of their friends and family came to see the lovely ceremony and to partake of the festivities and celebrations. All had a wonderful time.
The bride was gorgeous in her white wedding gown and the groom was very dashing in his black tuxedo.Everyone could tell that the love they had for each other was true.
A few months later, the wife came to the husband with a proposal, “I read in a magazine, a while ago, about how we can strengthen our marriage,” she offered.“Each of us will write a list of the things that we find a bit annoying with the other person. Then, we can talk about how we can fix them together and make our lives happier together.”
The husband agreed. So each of them went to a separate room in the house and thought of the things that annoyed them about the other. They thought about this question for the rest of the day and wrote down what they came up with.
The next morning, at the breakfast table, they decided that they would go over their lists.
“I'll start,” offered the wife. She took out her list.It had many items on it, enough to fill 3 pages. In fact, as she started reading the list of the little annoyances, she noticed that tears were starting to appear in her husband's eyes.“我先開始吧。”
“What's wrong?” she asked.“Nothing,” the husband replied, “keep reading your list.”
The wife continued to read until she had read all three pages to her husband. She neatly placed her list on the table and folded her hands over the top of it.
“Now, you read your list and then we'll talk about the things on both of our lists,” she said happily.“現在該你念了,然后我們談談所列舉的缺點。”
Quietly the husband stated, “I don't have anything on my list.I think that you are perfect the way that you are.I don't want you to change anything for me.You are lovely and wonderful and I wouldn't want to try and change anything about you.”
The wife, touched by his honesty and the depth of his love for her and his acceptance of her, turned her head and wept.
In life, there are enough times when we are disappointed, depressed and annoyed. We don't really have to go looking for them.We have a wonderful world that is full of beauty, light and promise. Why waste time in this world looking for the bad, disappointing or annoying when we can look around us, and see the wondrous things before us?
Secretary-General’s Message on International Day of Happiness
The twin concepts of happiness and well-being increasingly feature in international discussions of sustainable development and the future we want.
Many countries are going beyond the rhetoric of quality of life to incorporate practical measures to promote these concepts in their legislation and policy-making.These good practices can inspire other countries so that measuring and accounting for broader well-being, and not simply national income, becomes a universal practice.
Happiness may have different meanings for different people. But we can all agree that it means working to end conflict, poverty and other unfortunate conditions in which so many of our fellow human beings live.
Happiness is neither a frivolity nor a luxury. It is a deep-seated yearning shared by all members of the human family. It should be denied to no-one and available to all. This aspiration is implicit in the pledge of the United Nations Charter to promote peace, justice, human rights, social progress and improved standards of life.
Now is the time to convert this promise into concrete international and national action to eradicate poverty, promote social inclusion and inter-cultural harmony, ensure decent livelihoods, protect the environment and build institutions for good governance. These are the foundations for human happiness and well-being.
