Globalization:Challenges and Opportunities for China’s
Younger Generation Good morning,Ladies and Gentlemen.Today I’m very happy to be here to share with you some of my thoughts on the topic of Globlization. And first of all,I would like to mention an event in our recent history.Thirty years ago,American president Richard Nixon made an epoch-making visit to China,a country still isolate at that time.Premier Zhou Enlai said to him,”Your handshake came over the vastest ocean in the world:twenty-five years of no communication.”Ever since then,China and America have exchanged many handshakes of various kinds. The fundamental implication of this example is that the need and desire to felt by the two countries but by many other nations as well.As we can say today, environmentalists from different countries are making joint efforts to address the issue of global warming, economists are seeking solutiongs to financial crises that economy, and diplomats, and politicians are getting together to discuss the issue of combating terrorism,Peace and prosperity has become a common goal that we are striving for all over the world.Underlying this mighly trend of globalization is the echo of E.M.Forster’s world :”O(jiān)nly connect!”
With the IT revolution taking place, traditional boundaries of human society fall away. Our culture politics ,society, and commerce are being sloshed into a large melting pot of humanity. In this inter-linked world, ther are no outsiders, for a disturbance in one place is likely to inpact other parts of the globe. We have begun to realize that a world divided cannot endure.China is now actively integrating into the world. Our recent entry to the WTO is a good example. For decades ,we have taken pride in being self-reliant,but now we realize the importance of participating in and contributing to a vroader economic order. From the precarious role in the world arena to our present WTO membership,we have come a long way.But what does the way ahead look like?In some parts of the world people are demonstrating against globalization. Are they justified then, in criticizing the globalizing world?Instead of harrowing, the gap between the rich and the poor, they say, globalization enables developed nations to swallow the developing nations’wealth in debts and interest.Globalization, they argue, should be about an earnest interest in every other nation’s economic health. We are reminded by Karl Marx that capital goes beyond national borders and eludes control from any other entity. This has become a reslity,Multinational corporations are seeking the loweat cost, the largest market, and the most favorable policy. They are often powerful lobbyists in government decision-making ,ruthless expansionists in the global market place and a devastating presence to local businesses. For China, still more chanllenges exist. How are we going to ensure a smooth transition from the planned economy to a market-bases one?How to construct a legal system that is sound enough and broad enough to respond to the needs of a dynamic
society? How to maintain our cultural identity in an increasingly homogeneous world? And how to define greatness in our rise as a peace-loving nation?Globalization entails questions that concern us all.Like many young people of my age in China, I want to see my country get prosperous and and enjoy respect in the international community. But it seems to me that mere patriotism is not just enough. It is vitally important that we young people do more secious thingking and broaden our issues Such an globalization, but to take them on and give them honest thinking is the first steo to prepared for both opportunities and challenges coming our way.And this is also one of the thoughts that came to me while preparing this speech.Thank you.
Ladies and gentle man
it’s my great honor to be here to present you this speech about culture diversity and integration.Culture diversity based on the development of history. In ancient times, the world was split into several parts with little contact. The various environments breed diverse culture.Nowadays, as we stepped in to the information age, networks have increasingly developed over the past few decades, due to the growth of technical innovations. The progress of networks and use of computer have resulted in more frequent and convenient communication.Networks and the media have built a strong foundation for culture integration. In my personal perspective, culture should maintain its diversity rather than became the same.If we try to imagine that the world just exists one culture. How boring our life will be.Not only does diversity beautify the world, but also it broadens our minds as well as inspires us.For instance, the Amish(亞米西人)culture demonstrates its distinctiveness through dress and life style, while Hasidic Jews set themselves apart by their dress, vocational choices and eating habits. And Africa Americans distinguish themselves today by their manner of speech and gestures. You
see, how fantastic the culture is.Moreover, diverse cultures serve as an effective way to release our stress. We can imagine the relaxed and effortless lifestyle by reading the Chinese poems.Soft breeze, the warm sunshine, ripples in the source of the water…… All these images are so strong that they make people at peace. We may feel relaxed after appreciating the Scottish bagpipe(風笛)through the Pacific melody. In the contemporary society, it’s vital for us to master the capability of appreciating and absorbing the essence of other culture in our daily life in order to inject a flow of vitality into our traditional Chinese culture.First, we ought to do utmost to protect the traditional culture, such as the old architecture, the unique festivals, our fabulous folk culture etc.we should not random pull down the old buildings just for economic benefits. The graceful historic sites have irreplaceable value in the modern city. They are the symbol of the ancient civilization.Second, the mission of the school is to afford students culture classes in order to reinforce the culture education, which assist the children to understand our national culture
Thirdly, the government should devote to advertise the magnificent
traditional culture by holding a multitude of Chinese culture festivals abroad during our holiday to make the foreigners acquaint with the exclusive Chinese culture. Finally, developing and innovating the national culture serves as a bridge to flourish our culture. For example, cheongsam ['t??:?'s?m] 旗袍, as one of the most characteristic clothes in china, recently seldom people wear it in daily life.Maybe we can change the pattern and design of the cheongsam to make it prevailing again.I believe the Chinese culture will keep standing out in the diverse culture under our joint efforts!
Thank you for listening.

Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen.Today I would like to begin with a story. There was once a physical therapist who traveled all the way from America to Africa to do acensus about mountain
gorillas. These gorillas are a main attraction to tourists from all over the world;this put them severely under threat ofpoaching and being put into the zoo.She went there out of curiosity, but what she saw strengthened her determination to devote her whole life to fighting for those beautiful creatures. She witnessed a scene, a scene taking us to a place we never imaged we've ever been, where in the very depth of the African rainforest, surrounded by trees, flowers and butterflies, the mother gorillascuddled their babies.Yes, that's a memorable scene in one of my favorite movies, called Gorillas in the Mist, based on a true story of Mrs.Dian Fossey, who spent most of bet lifetime in Rwanda to protect the ecoenvironment there until the very end of her life.To me, the movie not only presents an unforgettable scene but also acts as atimeless reminder that we should not develop the tourist industry at the cost of our ecoenvironment.Today, we live in a world of prosperity but still threatened by so many new problems. On the one hand, tourism, as one of the most promising industries in the 21st century, provides people with the great opportunity to see everything there is to see and to go any place there is to go.It has become a lifestyle for some people, and has turned out to be the driving force in GDP growth. It has the magic to turn a backward town into a wonderland of prosperity. But on the other hand, many problems can occur---natural scenes aren't natural anymore.Deforestation to heat lodges is devastating Nepal.Oil spills from tourist boats are polluting Antarctica.Tribal people are forsaking their native music and dress to listen to U2 on Walkman and wear Nike and Reeboks. All theseappalling(令人震驚的)facts have brought us to the realization that we can no longer stand by and do nothing, because the very thought of it has beeneroding(侵蝕)our resources.Encouragingly, the explosive growth of global travel has put tourism again in the spotlight, which is why the United Nations has made 2002 the year of ecotourism, for the first time to bring to the world's attention the benefits of tourism, but also its capacity to destroy our
ecoenvironment. Now every year, many local ecoenvironmental protection organizations an: receiving donations--big notes, small notes or even coins--from housewives, plumbers(水管工人), ambulance drivers, salesmen, teachers, children and
invalids(殘疾人), Some of them can not afford to send the money but they do.These are the ones who drive the cabs, who nurse in hospitals, who are suffering from ecological damage in their neighborhood. Why? Because they care.Because they still want their Mother Nature back.Because they know it still belongs to them. This kind of feeling that I have, ladies and gentlemen, is when it feels like it, smells like it, and looks like it, it's all coming from a scene to remember, a scene to recall and to cherish. The other night, as l saw the moon linger over the land and before it was sent into the invisible, my mind was filled with songs.I found myself humming softly, not to the music, but to some-thing else, someplace else.a place remembered, a place untouched, a field of grass where no one seem to have been except the deer. And all those unforgettable scenes strengthened the feeling that it's lime for us to do something, for our own and our coming generation.Once again, I have come to think of Mrs.Dian Fossey be-cause it's with her spirit, passion, courage and strong sense of our ecoenvironment that we are taking our next step into the world. And no matter who we are, what we do and where we go, in our mind, there's always a scene to remember, a scene worth our effort to protect it and fight for it.Thank you very much.
