語音語調也是英文口語練習中的重點。我們知道，標準的發音并不能保證流利和悅耳的口語。完美的發音加上蹩腳的語調仍然是對聽眾耳朵的折磨。要知道英文單詞，和漢字所不同，是沒有聲調的，所以一個單詞例如people可以以四種甚至四種以上的音調來念，那么在一個特定的句子和語境中究竟怎么念呢？這就是語調的問題。

英文語調是一種感覺，它并沒有什么標準型，雖然眾所周知目前世界上兩種語調比較流行：英國型和美國型（當然還有很多人口講澳洲英語，印度英語，新加坡英語甚至中國式的英語）。

簡單說來語調的學習需要一個環境。就拿北京來說，盡管北京已經成為一個大的人口流動城市，或者稱之為移民城市，如果一個人來到了北京，四五個月過后，在不知不覺間原本很標準的普通話就很有可能帶上了些許的京腔京調。為什么呢？因為周圍的大多數人講話都有點京片子，這就是環境嘛。

那么現在如果沒有這個語言環境，也就是說不具備條件跑到英國或者美國去住那么一段時間該怎么辦呢？答案也很簡單：自己創造一個語言環境。其中一個很簡單的方法就是看DVD，聽電影對白，然后呢就充分發揮自己模仿的能力吧。試想，如果每天都是大量的好萊塢巨星或者Pop

Stars天天對著你又哭又笑，又跳又唱，我想一點美國英語或者英國英語的味道都沾不上是根本都不可能的吧。當然還有其他的方法。其中之一叫做“機器人”。在進行這種練習時需要以最慢的速度和最平的音調（就像機器人說話沒有聲調一樣）一口氣把一個句子讀完。其實，這種方法不僅練習了音調，還練習了發音和講英語的肺活量。當練習者以最慢的速度讀句子，也就是以最慢的速度讀句子中的單詞時，練習者會把單詞中的每一個元音發的更飽滿。只有當元音飽滿時，單詞念出來才標準，才好聽。長期以來，練習者就會養成好的發音習慣，有助于提高發音的基礎。

其次，以最平的聲調練習的目的主要是去除練習者本身錯誤的音調。同時較平的音調也是美國南方各州口音的特點之一。在練習者去除了本身錯誤的音調并且適應了平調以后，就一定要結合“聽”。無論是看DVD還是聽電影對白還是什么其它的聽力材料，一定要多聽。如果要學美國音就多聽美國電影，要學英國音就多聽英國材料。這樣，正如前面所提到的，在自己創造的語言環境當中就一定可以學好語音語調。

再來說說肺活量。中文的特點是一個漢字只有一個音節，詞句中音節和音節沒有任何聯系。也就是說沒有連讀，失去爆破，略讀，弱讀等等。一句話例如“成功需要一個人不懈的努力”，可以很連貫的念下來，也可以一個字一個字的頓出來“成，功，需，要，一，個，人，不，懈，的，努，力”。這兩者在表達上沒有什么差異。然而英文的單詞可以由一個音節甚至多達十幾個音節構成，單詞在句子中的連讀，失去爆破，略讀，弱讀比比皆是。換句話來說，如果我們把講中文比作打手槍，那么將英文就是打機關槍，“嘟嘟嘟嘟嘟嘟...”。這樣以來，由于兩種語言本身的發音構造不同，大多數人初學英文都感覺到念一個句子通常喘不過來氣，還沒有念完一個段落就累得不行要休息一下下，所以也就更提不上連貫了。所以解決的方法就要通過提高肺活量。在這個叫做“機器人”的聯系中，練習者必須用最慢的速度并且一口氣讀完一個句子。雖然剛開始感到很難，但是伴隨著練習量的不斷增加和堅持，最終練習者會自然而然的加快語速和流利度，那時講英文就像說漢語一樣自然輕松了。
