其實，這個令人產生焦慮的世界是一個相對安全的世界。在這樣的世界里，沒有人會覺得自己正在面臨著突然死亡的威脅。或許這種突然死亡會發生在某些人身上，但卻不會是他自己。這種焦慮就像是一種不安的心態，總讓人覺得有些不確定、不可預知的事情會出差錯。如果這個世界看起來很太平，就會令人擔憂，擔憂美好的時光可能即將結束。如果世界并不太平，同樣會產生焦慮，焦慮情況會變得更糟。焦慮愈來愈變得沒有目標，那些處于焦慮中的人們并不知道這到底應該是怪自己還是怪別人。人們并不清楚這種心神不寧的感覺究竟應歸咎于現在的年代、行政當局、氣候的變化，還是原子彈。
