“十二生肖”是指12種動物,即鼠、牛、虎、兔、龍、蛇、馬、羊、猴、雞、狗、豬。也就是俗話說的“屬相”(animal signs),是中國人特有的一種表示出生時間的方式。在英語中與它們有關的諺語(proverb).習語(idiom)有很多,而且有時具有出人意料的意思。另外,表示同一動物的單詞往往也不止一個。在特定的諺語.習語中需要使用特定的表示該動物的單詞,不能混淆。這在很大程度上是由于中西方對動物的看法不同。

一、鼠(rat)(口,比喻)不忠的人;(尤指困難時)背棄事業的人;討厭的人;不忠的人;(美,俚)新學生、下流女人。與它有關的諺語、習語多含貶義。例如: 1.a rat leaving a sinking ship 不能共患難的人
